Warming of the Antarctic ice-sheet surface since the 1957 International Geophysical Year
- E. Steig, D. Schneider, S. Rutherford, M. Mann, J. Comiso, D. Shindell
- Environmental ScienceNature
- 22 January 2009
It is shown that significant warming extends well beyond the Antarctic Peninsula to cover most of West Antarctica, an area of warming much larger than previously reported and suggested that neither can be attributed directly to increases in the strength of the westerlies.

Centennial-scale changes in the global carbon cycle during the last deglaciation
- S. Marcott, T. Bauska, E. Brook
- Environmental Science, GeographyNature
- 30 October 2014
CO2 and methane records of the last deglaciation from a new high-accumulation West Antarctic ice core are presented with unprecedented temporal resolution and precise chronology and suggest that processes operating on centennial timescales seem to be influencing global carbon-cycle dynamics and are at present not widely considered in Earth system models.
Winter warming in West Antarctica caused by central tropical Pacific warming
- Q. Ding, E. Steig, D. Battisti, M. Küttel
- Environmental Science
- 1 June 2011
The Pacific sector of Antarctica has experienced substantial warming in the past 30 years. Observations of global surface temperatures and atmospheric circulation data show that the warming in…
Holocene Climate Variability in Antarctica Based on 11 Ice-Core Isotopic Records
- V. Masson, F. Vimeux, R. Vaikmae
- Environmental Science, GeographyQuaternary Research
- 1 November 2000
A comparison is made of the Holocene records obtained from water isotope measurements along 11 ice cores from coastal and central sites in east Antarctica (Vostok, Dome B, Plateau Remote,…
On the origin and timing of rapid changes in atmospheric methane during the Last Glacial Period
- E. Brook, S. Harder, J. Severinghaus, E. Steig, Cara M. Sucher
- Environmental Science, Geography
- 1 June 2000
We present high resolution records of atmospheric methane from the GISP2 (Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2) ice core for four rapid climate transitions that occurred during the past 50 ka: the end of…
ESTIMATING RATES OF DENUDATION USING COSMOGENIC ISOTOPE ABUNDANCES IN SEDIMENT
- P. Bierman, E. Steig
- Geology, Environmental Science
- 1 February 1996
We propose, as a testable hypothesis, a basin-scale approach for interpreting the abundance of in situ produced cosmogenic isotopes, an approach which considers explicitly both the isotope and…
Influence of the Tropics on the Southern Annular Mode
- Q. Ding, E. Steig, D. Battisti, J. Wallace
- Environmental Science
- 16 April 2012
AbstractPerturbations in the southern annular mode (SAM) are shown to be significantly correlated with SST anomalies in the central tropical Pacific during austral winter and SST anomalies in the…
A Review of Antarctic Surface Snow Isotopic Composition : Observations, Atmospheric Circulation, and Isotopic Modeling
- V. Masson‐Delmotte, S. Hou, J. White
- Environmental Science
- 1 July 2008
A database of surface Antarctic snow isotopic composition is constructed using available measurements, with an estimate of data quality and local variability. Although more than 1000 locations are…
