- Physics, GeologyScience
- 12 August 2015
Using the Gemini Planet Imager, a Jupiter-like planet is discovered orbiting the ~20-million-year-old star 51 Eridani at a projected separation of 13 astronomical units and has a methane signature and is probably the smallest exoplanet that has been directly imaged.
THE GEMINI/NICI PLANET-FINDING CAMPAIGN: THE FREQUENCY OF PLANETS AROUND YOUNG MOVING GROUP STARS
- B. Biller, Michael C. Liu, D. Toomey
- Physics, Geology
- 5 September 2013
We report results of a direct imaging survey for giant planets around 80 members of the β Pic, TW Hya, Tucana-Horologium, AB Dor, and Hercules-Lyra moving groups, observed as part of the Gemini/NICI…
A dynamical calibration of the mass–luminosity relation at very low stellar masses and young ages
A dynamical determination of the mass of the newly resolved low-mass companion AB Dor C, whose mass is 0.090 ± 0.005 solar masses, finds that the standard mass–luminosity relations overestimate the near-infrared luminosity of such objects by about a factor of ∼2.5 at young ages.
The Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey: Giant Planet and Brown Dwarf Demographics from 10 to 100 au
- E. Nielsen, R. D. de Rosa, S. Wolff
- Physics, GeologyAstronomical Journal
- 10 April 2019
We present a statistical analysis of the first 300 stars observed by the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey. This subsample includes six detected planets and three brown dwarfs; from these…
An Imaging Survey for Extrasolar Planets around 45 Close, Young Stars with the Simultaneous Differential Imager at the Very Large Telescope and MMT
We present the results of a survey of 45 young (≲250 Myr), close (≲50 pc) stars with the Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) implemented at the VLT and the MMT for the direct detection of…
THE GEMINI NICI PLANET-FINDING CAMPAIGN: DISCOVERY OF A CLOSE SUBSTELLAR COMPANION TO THE YOUNG DEBRIS DISK STAR PZ Tel
- B. Biller, Michael C. Liu, D. Toomey
- Physics, Geology
- 27 July 2010
We report the discovery of a tight substellar companion to the young solar analog PZ Tel, a member of the β Pic moving group observed with high-contrast adaptive optics imaging as part of the Gemini…
THE ORBIT AND TRANSIT PROSPECTS FOR β PICTORIS b CONSTRAINED WITH ONE MILLIARCSECOND ASTROMETRY
- Jason J. Wang, J. Graham, S. Wolff
- Physics
- 18 July 2016
A principal scientific goal of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is obtaining milliarcsecond astrometry to constrain exoplanet orbits. However, astrometry of directly imaged exoplanets is subject to…
THE GEMINI NICI PLANET-FINDING CAMPAIGN: THE FREQUENCY OF GIANT PLANETS AROUND YOUNG B AND A STARS
- E. Nielsen, Michael C. Liu, D. Toomey
- Physics, GeologyProceedings of the International Astronomical…
- 1 June 2013
We have carried out high contrast imaging of 70 young, nearby B and A stars to search for brown dwarf and planetary companions as part of the Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign. Our survey…
Very high contrast integral field spectroscopy of AB Doradus C: 9-mag contrast at 0.2 arcsec without a coronagraph using spectral deconvolution
We present an extension of the spectral deconvolution (SD) method to achieve very high contrast at small inner working radii. We apply the method to the specific case of ground-based adaptive optics…
The International Deep Planet Survey: II. The frequency of directly imaged giant exoplanets with stellar mass
- R. Galicher, C. Marois, E. Nielsen
- Geology, Physics
- 27 July 2016
Radial velocity and transit methods are effective for the study of short orbital period exoplanets but they hardly probe objects at large separations for which direct imaging can be used. We carried…
