The utilization of alanine, glutamic acid, and serine as amino acid substrates for glycine N‐acyltransferase
- F. H. van der Westhuizen, P. J. Pretorius, E. Erasmus
- Chemistry, BiologyJournal of biochemical and molecular toxicology
The conjugation of benzoyl‐CoA with the aliphatic and acidic amino acids by glycine N‐acyltransferase, as well as the amides of the latter group, was investigated and may prove to have a useful contribution to detoxification of elevated acyl‐CoAs.
Nutritional status of HIV-1 seropositive patients in the Free State Province of South Africa: Anthropometric and dietary profile
It is confirmed that HIV/AIDS patients from this population are malnourished, and nutritional supplementation of HIV-1 seropositive patients should be considered, as this might lead to improved immune function in these patients.
Identification of the stereoisomeric configurations of methylcitric acid produced bysi-citrate synthase and methylcitrate synthase using capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry
- J. V. Rooyen, L. Mienie, S. K. Wadman
- Biology, ChemistryJournal of Inherited Metabolic Disease
- 1 November 1994
SummaryThe absolute separation of the four stereoisomeric configurations of methylcitric acid can be achieved on a nonchiral stationary phase SE30 capillary column using the correspondingO-acetylated…
Rosa roxburghii supplementation in a controlled feeding study increases plasma antioxidant capacity and glutathione redox state
- C. Janse van Rensburg, E. Erasmus, F. H. Westhuizen
- MedicineEuropean journal of nutrition
- 24 March 2005
Findings support the putative beneficial properties that have been linked to Rosa roxburghii as a dietary supplement that can enhance antioxidant status.
Variable clinical presentation in three patients with 3-methylglutaconyl-coenzyme A hydratase deficiency
3 patients with 3- MG-CoA hydratase deficiency who also manifested widely differing clinical presentations are presented, bringing to eight the total number of patients with documented 3-MG-Co A hydr atase deficiency.
Urinary excretion of homocitric acid and methylhomocitric acid in propionic acidaemia: minor metabolic products of the citrate synthase aldol condensation reaction.
Carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity monitoring in fibroblasts and leukocytes using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.
- L. Nolte, F. H. van der Westhuizen, P. J. Pretorius, E. Erasmus
- BiologyAnalytical biochemistry
- 15 February 1998
An electrospray ionization mass spectrometric method for detectingPalmitoylcarnitine formation from palmitoyl-CoA and carnitine, thus avoiding the use of radiolabeled isotopes and making it an ideal technique to measure CPT I activity.
The detection of 3-methylglutarylcarnitine and a new dicarboxylic conjugate, 3-methylglutaconylcarnitine, in 3-methylglutaconic aciduria.
Postnatal and antenatal laboratory diagnosis of glutaric aciduria II in a South African family.

Glutaric aciduria type II (GA II) was proved in a neonate who presented shortly after birth with respiratory distress, metabolic acidosis, non-ketotic hypoglycaemia and a sweaty-feet-like odour and should be considered in suspected organic acidaemia in the neonatal period.
