Phytochelatins play major roles in metal detoxification in plants and fungi. However, genes encoding phytochelatin synthases have not yet been identified. By screening for plant genes mediating metal tolerance we identified a wheat cDNA, TaPCS1, whose expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae results in a dramatic increase in cadmium tolerance. TaPCS1 encodes… (More)
Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is pathogenetically related to low levels of the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO). Because NO regulates cellular respiration and mitochondrial biogenesis, we hypothesized that abnormalities of bioenergetics may be present in IPAH. Evaluation of pulmonary artery endothelial cells from IPAH and control lungs in… (More)
The purpose of the present study is to prospectively compare myocardial perfusion imaging with rubidium-82 (82Rb) by positron emission tomography (PET) with thallium-201 (201Tl) imaging by single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) by recording both studies with a single dipyridamole handgrip stress, and reading both sets of images with the same display… (More)
UNLABELLED Multidetector SPECT systems equipped with a high-energy, or 511-keV collimator, have been proposed to offer a less expensive alternative to PET in myocardial viability studies with [18F]FDG. The objectives of this investigation included: (a) measuring the physical imaging characteristics of SPECT systems equipped with either a high-energy… (More)
The following report summarizes the authors' initial experience with detecting and aging vertebral fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis, emphasizing the use of an inversion recovery sequence with a short time to inversion (STIR) and comparing these results to that achieved using RBI.
A 67-year-old man with progressive dysphagia was recently diagnosed with a gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. Contrast-enhanced CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis reported a large GE junction tumor without evidence of metastatic disease. FDG positron emission tomography revealed intense tracer accumulation in the soft tissue mass at the GE junction… (More)
UNLABELLED The trend toward focused surgical parathyroidectomy requires precise preoperative localization of parathyroid lesions in patients with hyperparathyroidism. The purpose of this study was to directly compare the diagnostic accuracy of (99m)Tc-sestamibi/(123)I subtraction SPECT with SPECT/CT for the localization of abnormal parathyroid glands in… (More)
PURPOSE In this prospective National Cancer Institute-funded American College of Radiology Imaging Network/Radiation Therapy Oncology Group cooperative group trial, we hypothesized that standardized uptake value (SUV) on post-treatment [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) correlates with survival in stage III non-small-cell lung… (More)
UNLABELLED Preoperative localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism has been a longstanding diagnostic challenge. This study directly compared FDG-PET and sestamibi-SPECT for preoperative detection of abnormal parathyroid tissue. METHODS Twenty-one consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism… (More)
A technique is described involving simultaneous, dual-isotope SPECT imaging. Using 123I and 201TI, a patient study is presented, demonstrating the clinical utility of this technique in the detection and characterization of parathyroid pathology. The use of this technique in other clinical situations is discussed.
