We investigated how salicylic acid (SA) enhances H2O2 and the relative significance of SA-enhanced H2O2 in Arabidopsis thaliana. SA treatments enhanced H2O2 production, lipid peroxidation, and oxidative damage to proteins, and resulted in the formation of chlorophyll and carotene isomers. SA-enhanced H2O2 levels were related to increased activities of… (More)
A metabolic intermediate isolated from apple tissue fed either methionine or 5′-methylthioadenosine has been tentatively identified as a methionine-pyridoxal Schiff base. The formation of this compound is discussed in relation to ethylene biosynthesis.
Cycloheximide inhibited dormancy break and subsequent sprout growth of potato buds in the presence or absence of ethylene. Dormancy break was relatively insensitive to treatment with actinomycin D, in marked contrast to the inhibition observed with cycloheximide; however, sprout elongation was inhibited by actinomycin D treatment. This suggests that… (More)
Phospholipase D alpha (PLD, EC 126.96.36.199)) is a key enzyme involved in membrane deterioration that occurs during fruit ripening and senescence. The biochemical and molecular characteristics of PLD was studied in strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch) fruits, which are non-climacteric fruits. PLD activity was primarily associated with the mitochondrial and… (More)
l-Canaline, a potent inhibitor of pyridoxal phosphate-mediated reactions, markedly inhibited the conversion of methionine to ethylene and carbon dioxide by apple tissue. A 50% inhibition of methionine conversion into ethylene was obtained with 50 mum canaline and almost complete inhibition with 300 mum canaline. When 2,4-dinitrophenol, an oxidative… (More)
The impact of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the synthesis and retention of flavonoid compounds during storage and ripening of red Delicious (Malus x domestica Borkh.) apples was investigated. Numerous anthocyanins, flavonols, flavan-3-ols, and a hydroxycinnamic acid from three different fruit harvest maturities were monitored after a 120 day storage and 1… (More)
The characteristics of ethylene production and ACC conversion in 8-day-old soybean seedlings were examined and a relationship between cytochrome P-450 activity and ethylene-forming enzyme (EFE) activity was found. An atmosphere containing 10% carbon monoxide (CO) significantly inhibited ethylene production and ACC conversion in control soybean seedlings,… (More)
Previous studies have shown that uniconazole inhibits ethylene synthesis and protects plants from various stresses. The present research was conducted to delineate the mechanism of ethylene inhibition by uniconazole [(E)-(p-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-1-penten-3-ol]. Following heat stress of 48°C for 3 h, the shoots of the control… (More)
The influence of physicochemical conditions on the phospholipase D (PLD) activity of subcellular preparations of sweet corn (Zea mays L. cv. Peaches and Cream) kernels has been studied. The microsomal, mitochondrial, and cytosolic preparations of corn kernels possessed PLD activity albeit at varying proportions. The microsomal and cytosolic PLD activities… (More)
Ethylene production of McIntosh apples was reduced by both a postharvest treatment with CaCl2 and a daminozide treatment applied in the field. The CaCl2 treatment was more effective than daminozide in reducing the rate of softening during storage at 1°C.
