High-pressure noble gas jet injection is a mitigation technique which potentially satisfies the requirements of fast response time and reliability, without degrading subsequent discharges. Previously reported gas jet experiments on DIII-D showed good success at reducing deleterious disruption effects. In this paper, results of recent gas jet disruption(More)
This study examined the effect of exercise-induced dehydration by ~4% body mass loss on 5-km cycling time trial (TT) performance and neuromuscular drive, independent of hyperthermia. 7 active males were dehydrated on 2 occasions, separated by 7 d. Participants remained dehydrated (DEH, -3.8±0.5%) or were rehydrated (REH, 0.2±0.6%) over 2 h before completing(More)
The magnitude of plasma contact with main-wall surfaces is examined on the DIII-D poloidal divertor tokamak. A " window-frame " technique has been developed for axisymmetric surfaces to provide measurements of total plasma flux (ions/s) to the walls, I wall. Despite the use of a separatrix-wall gap that is 2-3 times the radial e-folding length of the plasma(More)

The work of the ITPA SOL/divertor group is reviewed and implications for ITER discussed. Studies of near SOL gradients have revealed a connection to underlying turbulence models. Analysis of a multi-machine database shows that parallel conduction gradients near the separatrix scale as major radius. New SOL measurements have implicated low-field side(More)
An improved energy confinement regime, I-mode is studied in Alcator C-Mod, a compact high-field divertor tokamak using Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) auxiliary heating. I-mode features an edge energy transport barrier without an accompanying particle barrier, leading to several performance benefits. H-mode energy confinement is obtained without(More)
Growth of tungsten nano-tendrils (" fuzz ") has been observed for the first time in the divertor region of a high-power density tokamak experiment. After 14 consecutive helium L-mode discharges in Alcator C-Mod, the tip of a tungsten Langmuir probe at the outer strike point was fully covered with a layer of nano-tendrils. The depth of the W fuzz layer (600(More)
We assess key plasma surface interaction issues of an all-metal plasma facing component (PFC) system for ITER, in particular a tungsten divertor surface, and a beryllium or tungsten first wall. Such a system eliminates problems with carbon divertor erosion and T/C codeposition, and for an all-tungsten system would better extrapolate to post-ITER devices.(More)
