OBJECTIVE This study investigated the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, its association with nutrition-related parameters, and the effects of ergocalciferol supplementation in stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Measures of interest included serum albumin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HgA1c), hemoglobin, phosphorus, corrected calcium, parathyroid hormone(More)
Data from the First Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES), 1971-1974, were used to examine the relationship between blood pressure and the distribution of subcutaneous body fat in 5506 survey participants, ages 30-59. Triceps and subscapular skinfolds were used as approximations of peripheral and centrally located body fat. The effects of race,(More)
The potential neuroleptic alpha-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-(5-fluoro-2-pyrimidinyl)-1-piperazine-butanol HCl (BMY 14802-1) was tested for its effects on mesotelencephalic dopamine (DA) neurons in albino rats. BMY 14802-1 increased DA turnover in DA terminal regions, increased nigral DA neuronal impulse flow and blocked the behavioral stimulation and inhibition of(More)
To determine the effects of dichlorvos vapour on the tumour incidence in rats, 5 week old Carworth Farm E strain rats weighing between 94 and 150 g were exposed to 0, 0.05, 0.5 and 5.0 mg/m3 in a 2-year inhalation study. The growth rate of all treated rats was depressed, particularly in the males. There was increased survival of the rats exposed to 5 mg/m3.(More)
We studied the kinetics of sublimating crystals with single-particle resolution by experiments with colloidal spheres and by computer simulations. A short-range attraction between spheres led to crystallites one to three layers thick. The spheres were tracked with optical microscopy while the attraction was reduced and the crystals sublimated. Large(More)

The hormones secreted by the major endocrine glands are now known to exert an important influenceon gastric secretion in bothman and animals. Scant attention, however, has been given to the possible effect of the thyroid hormones in this respect, although it has recently been shown that the mean acid output following maximal histamine stimulation is much(More)
The teratogenic potential of inhaled dichlorvos vapour for rabbits and rats was investigated on the offspring of primiparous female Dutch rabbits weighing 2 to 3 kg and primiparous female Carworth E strain rats weighing 200 to 300 g. The animals were exposed throughout pregnancy at concentrations of 0.25, 1.25 and 6.25 μg dichlorvos per litre of air. In an(More)
