BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES We investigated outcomes in a UK neonatal cohort as a benchmark for care of children with sickle cell disease (SCD). DESIGN AND METHODS Two-hundred and fifty-two children (180 with hemoglobin [Hb] SS, 64 with HbSC, and 8 with HbS/beta thalassemia), identified during 1983-2005 by universal birth screening in East London, were(More)
PURPOSE We reviewed follow-up of patients treated in 19 randomized trials of adjuvant epirubicin in early breast cancer to determine incidence, risk, and risk factors for subsequent acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). PATIENTS AND METHODS The patients (N = 9,796) were observed from the start of adjuvant treatment (53,080(More)
Cronkhite-Canada syndrome is a nonfamilial form of diffuse gastrointestinal polyposis associated with ectodermal abnormalities of alopecia, and hyperpigmentation. Recent experience with two patients in whom the diagnosis was pathologically confirmed suggest that there is a specific radiographic appearance to the stomach in this disorder. There are enlarged(More)
PURPOSE To define factors that influence outcome in children with localized but unresectable neuroblastoma by retrospective investigation of response to therapy and outcome in 21 Italian institutions. PATIENTS AND METHODS Of 145 assessable children diagnosed between 1979 and 1990, 77 were treated between 1979 and 1984 with three consecutive standard-dose(More)
PURPOSE To evaluate the prognostic role of MYCN oncogene amplification in children with neuroblastoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS Of 694 children (age, 0 to 15 years) with previously untreated neuroblastoma, 295 (42%) were evaluated at diagnosis for MYCN gene amplification. RESULTS Clinical characteristics and survival results of 295 patients studied and 399(More)
An uncommon presentation of prostate carcinoma to the supraclavicular lymph nodes is herein reviewed. With prompt diagnosis and treatment, patient survival can be extended. A high index of suspicion is necessary to make the diagnosis. The clinical features of four cases involving metastatic prostate carcinoma will be discussed.
Huge salt formations, trapping large untapped oil and gas reservoirs, lie in the deepwater region of the Gulf of Mexico. Drilling in this region is high-risk and drilling failures have led to well abandonments, with each costing tens of millions of dollars. Salt tectonics plays a central role in these failures. To explore the geomechanical interactions(More)
From September 1984 to July 1985, 11 children from 6 months to 6 years of age were treated with a three-drug regimen (OC-HDP), including vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and cisplatinum 200 mg/m2 given as five dose-fractions over 5 days. Nine had resistant and two relapsed neuroblastoma. Nine children had previously been treated with cisplatinum at(More)
From October 1984 to November 1987, 34 patients aged from 1 year 1 month to 7 years 7 months with resistant or relapsed neuroblastoma (NB) (group 1, 10 patients), unselected disseminated NB (group 2, 14 patients), or selected disseminated NB (group 3, 10 patients) received myeloablative therapy (MAT) followed by unpurged autologous bone marrow(More)
