Several converging lines of evidence suggest that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is selectively involved in error detection or evaluation of poor performance. Here we challenge this notion by presenting event-related potential (ERP) evidence that the feedback-elicited error-related negativity, an ERP component attributed to the ACC, can be elicited by(More)
While a common view is that vision is essential to motor performance, some recent studies have shown that continuous visual guidance may not always be required within certain time constraints. This study investigated a landing-related task (self-released falls) to assess the extent to which visual information enhances the ability to reduce the impacts at(More)
PURPOSE A study was initiated with the intent of demonstrating the cumulative effects of concussion in junior hockey players using visual event-related potentials and post-concussion syndrome (PCS) self-reports. METHODS Players were assessed at the beginning of the season (pre-injury) and at various times post-injury. RESULTS The results suggest that(More)
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to document various aspects of concussion in Canadian Amateur hockey including demographics, causes, treatment, and prevention in order to guide future recommendations on how to reduce injury. METHODS A detailed prospective and retrospective concussion history was obtained from British Columbia Junior Hockey League(More)
PURPOSE This study evaluated cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) after a sport-induced concussion, also called mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), by monitoring middle cerebral artery blood velocity (vMCA) with transcranial Doppler ultrasonography and simultaneous end-tidal carbon dioxide (PETCO(2)) measurements. METHODS Thirty-one athletes (16-25 yr old)(More)
We describe a female infant with an acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption as the presenting sign of rapidly fatal cystic fibrosis. The patient had growth retardation, developed an erythematous eruption unresponsive to oral zinc, and finally a generalized erosive dermatitis with associated edema, anemia and hypoproteinemia.
A highly reproducible model of fulminant hepatic failure was developed by administering intravenously the selective hepatotoxin galactosamine hydrochloride (4.25 mmoles per kg) to genetically uniform rabbits. The great majority of rabbits died between 21 and 44 hr after injection following a period of coma which lasted 2.6 hr on average. Serum biochemical(More)
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to assess the neuroautonomic cardiovascular regulation in recently concussed athletes at rest and in response to low-moderate steady-state exercise, using heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS A 5-min ECG sample was taken at rest from the 14 concussed athletes at 1.8 (+/- 0.2) days postinjury and again at 5 d later.(More)
Anecdotal and scientific evidence suggest humans tend to undershoot targets in rapid movements. We investigated whether this undershoot bias derives from energy minimization mechanisms. Participants performed 200 trials of two tasks: (1) a simple slider push to a target, and (2) a modified version of (1), designed so overshooting was less energy consuming(More)
