Observatoire des sciences et des technologies (OST), Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie Abstract For more than 40 years, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI, now part of Thomson Reuters) produced the only available bibliographic databases from which bibliometricians could compile large-scale bibliometric(More)
Reliable systems have always been built out of unreliable components [1]. Early on, the reliable components were small such as mirrored disks or ECC (Error Correcting Codes) in core memory. These systems were designed such that failures of these small components were transparent to the application. Later, the size of the unreliable components grew larger(More)
Differential equations are used in modeling diverse system behaviors in a wide variety of sciences. Methods for estimating the differential equation parameters traditionally depend on the inclusion of initial system states and numerically solving the equations. This paper presents Smooth Functional Tempering, a new population Markov Chain Monte Carlo(More)
Over the course of the last 5 years, we have instituted peritoneal dialysis on 26 (7.7%) of 338 complex postoperative cardiac bypass cases. The mean age of dialysis patients was 0.64±0.75 years with a range of 0.1–2.5 years. The indications for the start of dialysis were oliguria (15 cases), fluid overload (three cases), hyperkalemia (one case), and anuria(More)
Congenital right posterolateral (Bochdalek's) diaphragmatic hernia usually has clinical manifestations different from those of left Bochdalek's hernia; it often masquerades as a pleural effusion, an asymptomatic intrathoracic mass, or an intestinal obstruction. The primary reason for the difference in symptoms is the presence of the liver on the right,(More)
Aortic allograft fibrocalcification and valvular insufficiency have been observed in patients less than 3 years of age at initial replacement of the left ventricular outflow tract. From June 1985 through May 1992, 47 children have undergone aortic root replacement with cryopreserved aortic valve allografts. Thirty-three children were 3 years of age or older(More)
OBJECTIVES Elevated pulmonary vascular resistance may contribute to late Fontan circulation failure but is difficult to assess in such patients. Our aims were to assess outcomes of patients with failed Fontan circulation after heart transplantation and to determine whether elevated pulmonary vascular resistance might have contributed to the failure. A four-year-old boy with DORV and hypoplastic left ventricle underwent a modified Fontan procedure. He had a very difficult postoperative course complicated by continued pleural effusions. Eventually he died during a last ditch effort to ligate the thoracic duct at the right diaphragm. At autopsy, an obstructing giant thrombus was found in the right atrium.(More)
BACKGROUND The arterial switch operation (ASO) has become a safe, reproducible surgical procedure with low mortality in experienced centers. We examined morbidity, which remains significant, particularly for complex ASO. METHODS From 2003 to 2011, 101 consecutive patients underwent ASO, arbitrarily classified as "simple" (n=52) or "complex" (n=49).(More)
VectorBase (http://www.vectorbase.org) is a NIAID-supported bioinformatics resource for invertebrate vectors of human pathogens. It hosts data for nine genomes: mosquitoes (three Anopheles gambiae genomes, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus), tick (Ixodes scapularis), body louse (Pediculus humanus), kissing bug (Rhodnius prolixus) and tsetse fly(More)
