Biomonitoring of heavy metals in fish from the Danube River
Among the analyzed metals in muscle tissue of sampled fish, only mercury exceeded the maximal level permitted according to the national and EU regulations determining maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs, indicating a hazard for consumers of fish from the Danube River.
Red book of freshwater fish of Croatia
Crvena knjiga slatkovodnih riba Hrvatske sadrži popis ugroženih slatkovodnih vrsta riba Republike Hrvatske sa kartama rasprostranjenosti pojedinih vrsta te razloge njihove ugroženosti.
Phylogeography of isolated freshwater three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations in the Adriatic Sea basin.
The highly divergent clades and haplotypes unique to the southern Adriatic populations further suggest, in accordance with an earlier, more limited survey, that southern AdRIatic populations represent an important reservoir for ancient genetic diversity of G. aculeatus.
Assessment of DNA integrity in erythrocytes of Cobitis elongata affected by water pollution: the alkaline comet assay study
This study confirmed that the comet assay, applied on fish erythrocytes, is a useful tool in determining potential genotoxicity of water pollutants and suggested a genot toxicity of the aquatic environment in the Sava River.
Alien freshwater fish species in the Balkans—Vectors and pathways of introduction
A historical overview of freshwater fish introductions, the motivation behind them and the current distribution of alien freshwater fishes in the Balkans is provided.
Population genetic structure and demographic history of Aphanius fasciatus (Cyprinodontidae: Cyprinodontiformes) from hypersaline habitats in the eastern Adriatic
The authors' results imply pronounced intraspecific structuring of this species, whereas great environmental variations resulted in a smaller intrapopulational genetic diversity of A. fasciatus than seen in other Mediterranean fishes.
First record of Thysanoteuthis rhombus (Cephalopoda: Thysanoteuthidae) in the Adriatic Sea
The diamond-shaped squid, Thysanoteuthis rhombus Troschel, 1857 is a non-abundant epipelagic inhabitant of warm tropical and partially subtropical waters (water temperature >20 or 21°C, usually 23 to
First observation of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Nordmann, 1832) metacercariae in cypriniformes from Croatia
During an ichthyological study of the Ilova River, rudd infected with Posthodiplostomum cuticola was observed for the first time in Croatia and the condition of the hosts and parasitological indices such as prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of all hosts examined were investigated.
The Gyrodactylus (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae) parasite fauna of freshwater sand gobies (Teleostei, Gobioidei) in their centre of endemism, with description of seven new species
From five sand goby species, the first parasites are reported, describing seven new Gyrodactylus species, and some new flatworm species display unique morphological features, which reflect their hosts' endemism in the Balkans.
Emerging human pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii in the natural aquatic environment: a public health risk?
The aim was to examine the colonization of A. baumannii to freshwater fish Poecilia reticulata and found the low concentration in natural waters represents low colonization potential of freshwater fish.
