National collaborative study of the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae
TLDR
A total of 2,811 clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae were obtained during 1986 from 30 medical centers and one nationwide private independent laboratory in the United States; among these, 757 (26.9%) were type b strains, and all 14 strains were resistant to tetracycline; 11 produced beta-lactamase.
Semisynthetic glycopeptide antibiotics derived from LY264826 active against vancomycin-resistant enterococci
TLDR
Overall, these new glycopeptides, such as LY307599 and LY333328, show promise for use as agents against resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and penicillin -resistant pneumococci.
Biological Properties of Three 3-Heterocyclic-Thiomethyl Cephalosporin Antibiotics
Three new cephalosporin antibiotics, prepared by substitution of heterocyclic groups on 7-aminocephalosporanic acid, possess certain desirable chemical or biological properties. All three compounds
Detection of methicillin-resistant staphylococci by using the polymerase chain reaction
TLDR
A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based test was developed for the detection of mecA in staphylococci and low-stringency hybridization suggested the presence of a gene structurally related to femA in S. aureus strains examined regardless of the susceptibility profiles of the strains to methicillin.
Daptomycin disrupts membrane potential in growing Staphylococcus aureus
TLDR
The evidence indicates that the bactericidal activity of daptomycin is dependent on an available delta psi, and may account for many of the inhibitory effects on macromolecular biosyntheses and membrane function reported for this antibiotic.
In Vitro Activities of LY333328 and Comparative Agents against Nosocomial Gram-Positive Pathogens Collected in a 1997 Global Surveillance Study
TLDR
In vitro activity of LY333328 demonstrated potent activity against isolates of vancomycin-resistant enterococci, oxacillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, and penicillin- resistant pneumococci.
A54145 a new lipopeptide antibiotic complex: microbiological evaluation.
TLDR
A calcium dependence study on some of the factors showed that their in vitro antibacterial activity was greatly enhanced by the presence of calcium (50 mg/liter) in the media.
Compound 64716, a New Synthetic Antibacterial Agent
TLDR
Equivalent antibacterial activity along with superior pharmacological properties of 64716 when compared with nalidixic acid lead to the conclusion that this new compound is a promising antibacterial agent.
Characterization of vancomycin resistance in Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis
TLDR
Vancomycin resistance in Enterococcus faecium 180, a clinical isolate from England, was studied and expression of resistance was inducible and coincided with the appearance of a new membrane protein.
Activity of glycopeptides against vancomycin-resistant gram-positive bacteria
Gram-positive bacteria resistant to vancomycin are rare; but they include members of the genera Leuconostoc, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus, as well as recently emerging vancomycin-resistant strains
