Charge density waves in cuprate superconductors beyond the critical doping
- H. Miao, G. Fabbris, M. Dean
- Physics
- 19 March 2021
The unconventional normal-state properties of the cuprates are often discussed in terms of emergent electronic order that onsets below a putative critical doping of x c ≈ 0.19. Charge density wave…
Strongly Correlated Charge Density Wave in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} Evidenced by Doping-Dependent Phonon Anomaly.
A comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} finds that charge-density wave effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level before disappearing at x=0.25, indicating that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface.
Field-induced magnetic instability within a superconducting condensate
- D. Mazzone, S. Raymond, M. Kenzelmann
- PhysicsScience Advances
- 1 May 2017
The results suggest that the magnetic instability is not magnetically driven, and it is proposed that it is driven by a modification of superconducting condensate at H*.
Giant phonon anomalies in the proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid α-RuCl3
- Haoxiang Li, T. Zhang, H. Miao
- PhysicsNature Communications
- 10 June 2021
Phonon anomalies signify the coupling of phonon and Kitaev magnetic excitations in α-RuCl3 and is detected using inelastic X-ray scattering with meV resolution, a proof-of-principle method to detect anomalousexcitations in topological quantum materials.

Fully gapped superconductivity in the topological superconductor β -PdBi 2
- P. Biswas, D. Mazzone, E. Morenzoni
- Physics
- 3 June 2016
The recent discovery of the topologically protected surface states in the beta-phase of PdBi2 has reignited the research interest in this class of superconductors. Here, we show results of our muon…
Strong Superexchange in a d^{9-δ} Nickelate Revealed by Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering.
- J. Q. Lin, P. Villar Arribi, M. Dean
- PhysicsPhysical Review Letters
- 19 August 2020
Layered nickelates provide a route to testing the relevance of superexchange to nickelate superconductivity, and a magnon energy scale of ∼80 meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange is observed, proving that d^{9-δ} nickelates can host a large supesrexchange.
Crystal structure and phonon softening in Ca 3 Ir 4 Sn 13
- D. Mazzone, S. Gerber, M. Kenzelmann
- Physics
- 27 March 2015
We investigated the crystal structure and lattice excitations of the ternary intermetallic stannide Ca3Ir4Sn13 using neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. For T > T* ~ 38 K the x-ray diffraction…

The intermediate valence (IV) compound YbAl$_3$ exhibits nonintegral valence (Yb 4$f^{14-n_f}$ (5d6s)$^z$ where z = 2+n$_f$ = 2.75) in a moderately heavy (m* = 20-30me) ground state with a large…
Laser-induced transient magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 throughout the Brillouin zone
- D. Mazzone, D. Meyers, M. Dean
- PhysicsProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
- 17 February 2020
It is demonstrated that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets and that they persist for several picoseconds, which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets.
