It is indicated that although ungulate exclusion may be a necessary and critical first step, it is not sufficient to adequately preserve and maintain Hawaii's remaining tropical dry forest remnants.
Exotic species invasion into Mauritius wet forest remnants

Data suggest that unless steps are taken to check the spread of exotics, floristic composition at these sites will shift towards total invasion and degradation as has occurred elsewhere on Mauritius.

Effects of light, alien grass, and native species additions on hawaiian dry forest restoration

It is suggested that relatively simple techniques may be used to simultaneously establish populations of vig- orous understory native species and suppress alien grasses at relatively large spatial scales, and that remnant or newly created favorable microsites may be exploited to facilitate the establishment of rarer native overstory species.
Deliberate Introductions of Species: Research Needs Benefits can be reaped, but risks are high

The silent invasion of Hawaii by insects, disease organisms, snakes, weeds and other pests is the single greatest threat to Hawaii’s economy and natural environment.... Even one new pest-like the…

Alien Plant Invasions, Introduced Ungulates, and Alternative States in a Mesic Forest in Hawaii
Effective conservation of this and other remnant native Hawaiian forests will require both ungulate exclusion, removal of alien plant species with especially detrimental effects on native species, and proactive restoration programs for native species without natural sources of propagules.
