It is reported that tumor necrosis factor alpha mRNA is increased after treatment with x-rays in certain human sarcoma cells, and production of TNF-alpha may add to radiation lethality through autocrine and paracrine mechanisms.

Analysis of mRNA expression for different classes of immediate early genes after cellular x-irradiation implicate the EGR1 and JUN proteins as signal transducers during the cellular response to radiation injury and suggest that this effect is mediated in part by a protein kinase C-dependent pathway.

Radiotherapy planning using IMRT demonstrated the capability of this technique to target anatomic or anatomic/physiologic target volumes and it is possible to use IMRT to target dose to metabolically active sites based on coregistered PET/CT data.
