Patient non-compliance: deviance or reasoned decision-making?

Preliminary assessment of the efficacy, tolerability and safety of a cannabis-based medicine (Sativex) in the treatment of pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis.
In the first ever controlled trial of a CBM in RA, a significant analgesic effect was observed and disease activity was significantly suppressed following Sativex treatment.
Free radicals in inflammation: second messengers and mediators of tissue destruction.
- V. Winrow, P. Winyard, C. Morris, D. Blake
- BiologyBritish Medical Bulletin
- 1993
It is argued that disturbances in the second messenger and regulatory activities of free radicals may also contribute significantly to the inflammatory process.

Evaluating the antioxidant potential of new treatments for inflammatory bowel disease using a rat model of colitis.
- A. Millar, D. Rampton, D. Blake
- Medicine, BiologyGut
- 1 September 1996
The similarity of the chemiluminescence responses of colonic biopsy specimens from acetic acid induced colitis and ulcerative colitis to a range of conventional antioxidants and standard treatments suggests that this model is a useful method for testing the antioxidant potential of new therapies for inflammatory bowel disease.
Increased concentrations of nitrite in synovial fluid and serum samples suggest increased nitric oxide synthesis in rheumatic diseases.
- A. Farrell, D. Blake, R. Palmer, S. Moncada
- Medicine, BiologyAnnals of the Rheumatic Diseases
- 1 November 1992
Increased nitric oxide production in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis is measured indirectly as nitrite in serum and synovial fluid samples together with serum samples from healthy volunteers matched for age and sex to suggest a role forNitric oxide as an inflammatory mediator in r heumatic diseases.
A controlled pilot study of the utility of mirror visual feedback in the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome (type 1).
In early CRPS (type 1), visual input from a moving, unaffected limb re-establishes the pain-free relationship between sensory feedback and motor execution, andTrophic changes and a less plastic neural pathway preclude this in chronic disease.
Oxidative DNA damage and cellular sensitivity to oxidative stress in human autoimmune diseases.
- S. Bashir, G. Harris, M. Denman, D. Blake, P. Winyard
- Medicine, BiologyAnnals of the Rheumatic Diseases
- 1 September 1993
There was increased genomic DNA damage, and increased susceptibility to cytotoxic killing by hydrogen peroxide, in lymphocytes from patients with certain autoimmune diseases, which might be explained by defective repair of DNA damage or by increased production of reactive oxygen intermediates in inflammation.
Skin inflammation: reactive oxygen species and the role of iron.
- C. W. Trenam, D. Blake, C. Morris
- BiologyJournal of Investigative Dermatology
- 1 December 1992
The role of iron and ROS in the pathogenesis of inflammatory skin disease is discussed as is the possibility of novel therapeutic strategies based on their removal.
