Objectives. To evaluate the use of interposition flaps in repairing vesicovaginal fistulas (VVFs) of benign and malignant etiologies. Interposition flaps are not routinely used in the repair of VVFs when the surrounding tissues appear healthy and well-vascularized, such as in a benign etiology.Methods. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 37 women(More)
Compensatory fuzzy neural networks (CFNN) without normalization, which can be trained with a backpropagation learning algorithm, are proposed as a pattern recognition technique for the intelligent detection of Doppler ultrasound waveforms of abnormal neonatal cerebral hemodynamics. Doppler ultrasound signals were recorded from the anterior cerebral arteries(More)
Doppler ultrasound was used to study the effect of the first intravenous dose of caffeine on splanchnic haemodynamics in preterm neonates. Peak systolic velocity in the superior measenteric artery and coeliac axis was significantly reduced for 6 hours after caffeine infusion. The effect of this reduction in blood flow to the neonatal gut is not known.
AIM To study the effect of enteral feeding on splanchnic blood flow velocity in preterm infants. METHOD Coeliac axis and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) blood flow velocity were measured longitudinally in a cohort of 61 babies using Doppler ultrasound. RESULTS Babies fed 1 hourly had significantly higher preprandial SMA peak systolic velocity (PSV)(More)
Members of the new class of antimigraine compounds, 5HT1B/1D agonists, as well as ergotamine, may cause vasoconstriction through stimulation of 5HT receptors on peripheral vessels. The cardiovascular effects of 20 mg oral zolmitriptan (Zomig, formerly 311C90), 2 mg oral ergotamine and the combination were assessed in a randomized double-blind,(More)
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We undertook this study to examine the integrity of cerebral autoregulation in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with moderate hypothermia (33 degrees C). METHODS Fourteen patients, aged 58+/-11 years, with an acute anterior circulation infarction and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score >15 were evaluated.(More)
Sham and real trials of peritoneal dialysis were carried out in a double-blind crossover study design to test the efficacy of peritoneal dialysis as a treatment for psoriasis. The criteria for patients included having severe plaque-type psoriasis unresponsive to all conventional therapy including methotrexate. Patients were randomly assigned to 4 weeks of(More)
A prospective study was made of sequential changes in serum creatine kinase (CK) and CK-MB isoenzyme activity within the 12 hours following admission to the coronary care unit on 65 patients with recent chest pain. CK determinations were performed in the laboratory or in the coronary care unit using a dry reagent strip analyser. Slope values for log CK/hour(More)
Most investigators agree that a urethral stricture is a predisposing cause of primary carcinoma of the urethra. The etiology of the carcinoma is probably chronic irritation. The role of squamous metaplasia in the etiology is discussed briefly. A case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the urethra occurring 4 years after a first stage urethroplasty is(More)
