The cationic ultrastructural tracer polyethyleneimine (PEI: pI approximately equal to 11.0), binds electrophysically to uniformly spaced discrete electron-dense anionic sites present in the laminae rarae of the rat glomerular basement membrane (GBM), mesangial reflections of the GBM, Bowman's capsule, and tubular basement membranes when administered(More)
We studied a cohort of 2275 blacks and whites of both sexes in Charleston County, South Carolina, during the period of 1960-1961 to 1974-1975. There were 93 prevalent cases of coronary heart disease (CHD) at intake, and 317 new cases occurred by 1975 in persons originally free of CHD. White males had the highest incidence rates for all types of CHD and(More)
This study reports that education effects but not skin color effects were associated with blood pressure and the incidence of hypertension in a cohort of Black females in Charleston, South Carolina, observed over the period 1960-1975. The authors suggest that skin color may be a secondary (non-causal) associate of blood pressure in Blacks.
Platelets obtained from some diabetic patients show enhanced in vitro platelet aggregation. This study sought to determine if platelet obtained from insulin-dependent diabetic subjects synthesize increased quantities of the labile aggregating substance, thromboxane A2 (TXA2), and if it may play a role in the enhanced platelet aggregation. Arachidonic acid(More)
Plasma and lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, glucose and haemoglobin A1c concentrations were measured in 106 patients (56 males) with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (age range 2–22 years) and 36 normal volunteers (19 males) with similar age and sex distribution. The diabetic patients were further divided into three subgroups: “good”, fair and(More)
The extent of skin thickness in scleroderma has been reported to correlate with the degree of internal organ involvement. An objective method for the clinical evaluation of skin involvement (skin score) in scleroderma is described. In this preliminary study, the method was tested in twenty scleroderma patients. An acceptable degree of inter-observer(More)
A report linking human polycystic ovary with increased exposure to environmental DDT (Heinrichs et al. 1971) prompted the present study comparing effects of PCB and DDT or their combination on reproduction in female rats under more realistic conditions with respect to level (75 and 150 ppm), route of administration (dietary contaminant), and period of(More)
Variations in same-size endodontic files (K-type, style B, stainless steel) were detected with a three-dimensional gauge. The variation between same-size files was within 3 mm. in most instances; however, variations from the smallest file in one size group to the largest file in the next size group was 5 mm. or more in many instances. Overall, about 74(More)
A quantitative immunofluorescence assay for IgM rheumatoid factor (RF) has been developed using the FIAX fluorometer. Two hundred and six (206) patient serum samples submitted for RF or antinuclear antibody testing were assayed by the fluorometric method and by the sheep cell slide agglutination test (Rheumaton, Wampole Laboratories) currently used in our(More)
