This paper presents a complete characterization of cyclic codes over GF(q) which areq-ary images of linear codes over GF(q 2). New cyclic codes over GF(2 r ) are constructed as images of other cyclic codes over GF(23r ), for some positive integersr. An application to decoding is given.
