PURPOSE To examine a relationship between serum transforming growth factor β -1 (TGF-β1) values and radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF). METHODS AND MATERIALS We conducted a prospective analysis of the development of RIF in 39 women with American Joint Committee on Cancer stage 0-I breast cancer treated with lumpectomy and accelerated partial breast(More)
PURPOSE Efficacy and acute toxicity of proton craniospinal irradiation (p-CSI) were compared with conventional photon CSI (x-CSI) for adults with medulloblastoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS Forty adult medulloblastoma patients treated with x-CSI (n=21) or p-CSI (n=19) at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2003 to 2011 were retrospectively(More)
5'-Deoxy-5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA) phosphorylase was purified 13.4-fold from human peripheral lymphocytes. The enzyme demonstrated normal Michaelis-Menten kinetics with Km values of 26 microM and 7.5 mM for the two substrates, MTA and phosphate, respectively. The rate of MTA degradation was temperature dependent, 47 degrees being the optimum temperature.(More)
This study was designed to elucidate the mechanism of the leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) test in man. To identify the reactive cell types, enriched leukocyte populations (dextran-separated leukocytes and Hypaque-Ficoll-isolated mononuclear cells and neutrophils, as well as rosette-isolated B- and T-lymphocytes) were tested for leukocyte adherence in(More)
BACKGROUND Proton craniospinal irradiation (p-CSI) has been proposed to reduce side effects associated with CSI. We evaluated acute toxicities and preliminary clinical outcomes in a series of adults treated with p-CSI. METHODS We reviewed medical records for 50 patients (aged 16-63 y) with malignancies of varying histologies treated consecutively with(More)
Utilizing an OKT-4-positive human T-cell lymphoma cell line as immunogen, we have produced a monoclonal antibody (MAb), designated TH5.2, which is capable of augmenting the interleukin-2 (IL-2) production and proliferation of antigen-activated T cells. TH5.2 MAb by itself is not mitogenic for T cells; the enhanced IL-2 production and proliferation requires(More)
PURPOSE Recent clinical studies have shown a correlation between radiation dose to the thoracic vertebral bodies (TVB) and the development of hematologic toxicity (HT) in patients receiving chemoradiation (CRT) for lung cancer (LuCa). The feasibility of a bone-marrow sparing (BMS) approach in this group of patients is unknown. We hypothesized that radiation(More)
A series of substituted 2,2'-bi-1H-imidazoles and related analogues was synthesized and evaluated for inotropic activity. Structure-activity relationship studies based on a nonclassical bioisosteric approach indicated the necessity of a cyano group on one of the imidazole rings to obtain the desired pharmacological profile. 4(5)-Cyano-2,2'-bi-1H-imidazole(More)
