Seventy-four patients previously treated in our department for germ cell tumour of the testis underwent a series of tests to determine the frequency of long-term therapeutic complications. All had received cisplatin-based chemotherapy as part of their treatment. There was a significant deterioration in renal function throughout the group. Eighteen (24%) had(More)
A 70-year-old woman presented with back pain due to vertebral crush fractures and was found to have hypercalcaemia. Investigation revealed evidence of both primary hyperparathyroidism and Bence Jones myeloma and this was subsequently confirmed at necropsy. This is the first description of a case in which the simultaneous occurrence of both diseases was(More)
BACKGROUND Median survival of patients with local-regional gastric carcinoma is 10 months. Resection of the primary tumor and regional lymph nodes, with tumor-free margins (curative resection), has been the most effective treatment for local-regional gastric carcinoma. However, median survival of patients with curative resection of gastric carcinoma is 24(More)
An immunoperoxidase technique has been used to localise clotting factor XIII subunits A and S in human tissues. The presence of factor XIII in placenta and megakaryocytes was confirmed. Factor XIII was also found in fibroblasts, a hitherto unreported finding. Factor XIII subunits were not detected in hepatocytes, although factor XIII was found in(More)
We performed a kinome-wide siRNA screen and identified 70 kinases altering cell migration in A549 lung cancer cells. In particular, ribosomal S6 kinase 1 (RSK1) silencing increased, whereas RSK2 and RSK4 downregulation inhibited cell motility. In a secondary collagen-based three-dimensional invasion screen, 38 of our hits cross-validated, including RSK1 and(More)
Malignant epithelioid schwannoma is a well-defined entity. However epithelioid tumours arising other than in a nerve trunk, in a benign nerve sheath tumour or in neurofibromatosis are problematical. We describe a case of a nodular tumour of the cheek which recurred twice without metastasis. Light microscopy showed an amelanotic epithelioid tumour.(More)
We have developed a model system of human fibrosarcoma cell lines that do or do not possess and express an oncogenic mutant allele of N-ras. HT1080 cells contain an endogenous mutant allele of N-ras, whereas the derivative MCH603 cell line contains only wild-type N-ras. In an earlier study (S. Gupta et al., Mol. Cell. Biol. 20:9294-9306, 2000), we had shown(More)
Factor XIII sub-units a and s (XIIIa and XIIIb) have been localized previously in fibroblasts of the liver and in other tissues. An immunoperoxidase technique was used to localize these factors in benign and malignant fibroblastic and fibro-histiocytic lesions. Positive staining was present in cells in almost all of the benign and fibro-histiocytic lesions(More)
We have introduced 3'-terminal deletions of increasing size in the v-erbB oncogene and analysed the effects of these mutations on the transformation of fibroblasts and erythroblasts. The results show that the transforming activity of the mutants is gradually diminished, and completely abolished in those mutants that do not produce stable v-erbB proteins.(More)
