We report on the fabrication of three-dimensional waveguide beam splitters in a dielectric Bi(4)Ge(3)O(12) (BGO) crystal by direct femtosecond laser writing. In the laser written tracks of BGO crystal, positive refractive index is induced, resulting in so-called Type I configuration waveguiding cores. The "multiscan" technique is utilized to shape cores(More)
Low-loss depressed cladding waveguides have been produced in Nd:YAP laser crystal by using direct femtosecond laser writing. Under optical pump at 812 nm at room temperature, continuous-wave simultaneous dual-wavelength laser oscillations at 1064 and 1079 nm, both along TM polarization, have been realized in the waveguiding structures. It has been found(More)
Two laser cleaning approaches based on ablation by ultraviolet laser pulses of femtosecond (fs) and nanosecond (ns) durations for the removal of shellac varnish from egg-yolk based tempera paints are investigated. Laser irradiation effects, induced on the varnish layer and on the underlying temperas by multiple pulses in the fs domain at 398 and 265 nm and(More)
We demonstrate that diffractive lenses (DLs) can be used as a simple method to tune the central wavelength of femtosecond pulses generated from second-order nonlinear optical processes in birefringent crystals. The wavelength tunability is achieved by changing the relative distance between the nonlinear crystal and the DL, which acts in a focusing(More)
We report on the direct low-repetition rate femtosecond pulse laser microfabrication of optical waveguides in KTP crystals and the characterization of refractive index changes after the thermal annealing of the sample, with the focus on studying the potential for direct laser fabricating Mach-Zehnder optical modulators. We have fabricated square cladding(More)
We propose the use of kinoform diffractive lenses to focus near infrared femtosecond pulses in sapphire crystals for supercontinuum generation. It is shown that a strongly peaked structure appears in the blue region of the supercontinuum spectra. The central wavelength of this peak can be easily controlled by simply changing the lens-crystal distance.(More)
Sum-frequency generation of femtosecond pulses by noncollinear phase matching in a micro-structured beta-BaB(2)O(4) crystal has been investigated. A 1D relief grating was recorded in the surface of a beta-BaB(2)O(4) crystal by direct irradiation with femtosecond pulses. Groove dimensions of 1 mum width and 200 nm depth were obtained for the recording(More)
Magnetic fields, which play a major role in a large number of astrophysical processes can be traced via observations of dust polarization. In particular, Planck low-resolution observations of dust polarization have demonstrated that Galactic filamentary structures, where star formation takes place, are associated to well organized magnetic fields. A better(More)
The femtosecond laser micromachining of transparent optical materials offers a powerful and feasible solution to fabricate versatile photonic components towards diverse applications. In this work, we report on a new design and fabrication of ridge waveguides in LiNbO3 crystal operating at the mid-infrared (MIR) band by all-femtosecond-laser(More)
