This is the first study to show that engagement of CD44 with mAbs or its natural ligand induces COX‐2, generates VEGF, and thus leads to an increase in EC proliferation, which may have important and widespread implications for the development of novel therapeutic agents for modulating blood vessel growth during ischemic heart disease, during inflammation, or around solid tumors. The influence of smoking and of oral and transdermal nicotine on blood pressure, and haematology and coagulation indices.
Oral and/or transdermal nicotine does not influence blood pressure or the haematology and coagulation indices the authors have measured, and there were no significant changes in blood pressures, platelet count, mean platelet volume, viscosity or anti-thrombin III. Expand
Engagement of CD 44 modulates cyclooxygenase induction , VEGF generation , and cell proliferation in human vascular endothelial cells
CD44 is a receptor for hyaluronic acid and is found on the surface of hematopoetic cells and in mesenchymal tissue. It is also expressed on endothelial cells (EC). Cyclooxygenase (COX) is the… Expand
Induction of cyclooxygenase‐1 and ‐2 modulates angiogenic responses to engagement of αvβ3
Findings strongly indicate that αvβ3‐mediated angiogenesis is partly due to induction of both isoforms of COX. Expand
Acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and colitis: an unusual presentation of Wegener's granulomatosis.
- C. Steele, S. Bohra, P. Broe, F. Murray
- European journal of gastroenterology & hepatology
- 1 August 2001
A young woman who presented initially to hospital with gastrointestinal features and then developed a severe colitis and severe gastrointestinal haemorrhage followed treatment with intravenous steroids and cyclophosphamide, gastrointestinal symptoms and signs improved dramatically, as did her pulmonary disease. Association between cyclooxygenase‐2‐expressing macrophages, ulceration and microvessel density in colorectal cancer
The aim of this study was to define the relationship between microvessel density (MVD), tumour COX‐2 and macrophage COx‐2 expression. Expand
Induction of cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 modulates angiogenic responses to engagement of alphavbeta3.
Findings strongly indicate that alphavbeta3-mediated angiogenesis is partly due to induction of both isoforms of COX. Expand
Disinfection of gastrointestinal fibrescopes--evaluation of the disinfectants Dettox and Gigasept.
The disinfectant solutions Dettox and Gigasept were evaluated during disinfection procedures with a new disinfecting apparatus for gastrointestinal fibrescopes and found that adequate disinfection of endoscopic equipment prevents endoscopy-related infection. Expand
Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in primary human colorectal cancers and bone marrow micrometastases.

- Digestive and liver disease : official journal of…
- 1 June 2004
In this pilot study, there was no association between cyclooxygenase-2 expression and bone marrow micrometastases in patients with otherwise localised or disseminated disease. Expand
