Embedded Clusters in Molecular Clouds
The first extensive catalog of galactic embedded clusters is compiled, finding that the embedded cluster birthrate exceeds that of visible open clusters by an order of magnitude or more indicating a high infant mortality rate for protocluster systems.
Disk Frequencies and Lifetimes in Young Clusters
- Karl E. Haisch, Jr., E. Lada, C. Lada
- Physics, Geology
- 20 April 2001
We report the results of the first sensitive L-band survey of the intermediate-age (2.5-30 Myr) clusters NGC 2264, NGC 2362, and NGC 1960. We use JHKL colors to obtain a census of the circumstellar…
Further Mid-Infrared Study of the rho Ophiuchi Cloud Young Stellar Population: Luminosities and Masses of Pre--Main-Sequence Stars

A Census of the Young Cluster IC 348
- K. Luhman, J. Stauffer, C. Lada
- Physics, Geology
- 23 April 2003
We present a new census of the stellar and substellar members of the young cluster IC 348. We have obtained images at I and Z for a 42′ × 28′ field encompassing the cluster and have combined these…
ON THE STAR FORMATION RATES IN MOLECULAR CLOUDS
- C. Lada, M. Lombardi, J. Alves
- Physics
- 15 September 2010
In this paper, we investigate the level of star formation activity within nearby molecular clouds. We employ a uniform set of infrared extinction maps to provide accurate assessments of cloud mass…
The Luminosity and Mass Function of the Trapezium Cluster: From B Stars to the Deuterium-burning Limit
- August Muench, E. Lada, E. Observatory
- Physics
- 7 March 2002
We use the results of a new multiepoch, multiwavelength, near-infrared census of the Trapezium cluster in Orion to construct and analyze the structure of its infrared (K-band) luminosity function.…
Spitzer Observations of IC 348: The Disk Population at 2-3 Million Years
- C. Lada, August Muench, E. Young
- Physics, Geology
- 21 November 2005
We present near- and mid-infrared photometry obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope of ∼300 known members of the IC 348 cluster. We merge this photometry with existing ground-based optical and…
The mass function of dense molecular cores and the origin of the IMF
- J. Alves, M. Lombardi, C. Lada
- Physics
- 5 December 2006
Context. Stars form in the cold dense cores of interstellar molecular clouds and the detailed knowledge of the spectrum of masses of such cores is clearly a key for the understanding of the origin of…
The Nature of the Dense Core Population in the Pipe Nebula: Thermal Cores Under Pressure
- C. Lada, August Muench, J. Rathborne, J. Alves, M. Lombardi
- Physics
- 7 September 2007
In this paper we present the results of a systematic investigation of an entire population of predominately starless dust cores within a single molecular cloud, the Pipe Nebula. Analysis of…
Dust Extinction and Molecular Gas in the Dark Cloud IC 5146
- C. Lada, E. Lada, D. Clemens, J. Bally
- Physics, Environmental Science
- 10 July 1994
In this paper we describe a powerful method for mapping the distribution of dust through a molecular cloud using data obtained in large-scale, multiwavelength, infrared imaging surveys. This method…
