Signatures of mutational processes in human cancer
- L. Alexandrov, S. Nik-Zainal, M. Stratton
- BiologyNature
- 14 August 2013
It is shown that hypermutation localized to small genomic regions, ‘kataegis’, is found in many cancer types, and this results reveal the diversity of mutational processes underlying the development of cancer.

Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy in higher eukaryotes
- D. Klionsky, H. Abeliovich, R. Deter
- BiologyAutophagy
- 16 February 2008
A set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of the methods that can be used by investigators who are attempting to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as by reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that investigate these processes are presented.
Molecular mechanisms of cell death: recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death 2018
- L. Galluzzi, I. Vitale, G. Kroemer
- BiologyCell Death and Differentiation
- 23 January 2018
An updated classification of cell death subroutines focusing on mechanistic and essential aspects of the process is proposed, and the utility of neologisms that refer to highly specialized instances of these processes are discussed.
Whole-genome sequencing identifies recurrent mutations in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
The patterns of somatic mutation, supported by functional and clinical analyses, strongly indicate that the recurrent NOTCH1, MYD88 and XPO1 mutations are oncogenic changes that contribute to the clinical evolution of the disease.
The genome of a songbird
- W. Warren, D. Clayton, R. Wilson
- BiologyNature
- 1 April 2010
This work shows that song behaviour engages gene regulatory networks in the zebra finch brain, altering the expression of long non-coding RNAs, microRNAs, transcription factors and their targets and shows evidence for rapid molecular evolution in the songbird lineage of genes that are regulated during song experience.
Genome sequence of the Brown Norway rat yields insights into mammalian evolution
- R. Gibbs, G. Weinstock, F. Collins
- BiologyNature
- 1 April 2004
This first comprehensive analysis of the genome sequence of the Brown Norway (BN) rat strain is reported, which is the third complete mammalian genome to be deciphered, and three-way comparisons with the human and mouse genomes resolve details of mammalian evolution.
Exome sequencing identifies recurrent mutations of the splicing factor SF3B1 gene in chronic lymphocytic leukemia
- V. Quesada, L. Conde, C. López-Otín
- BiologyNature Genetics
- 2012
This work provides the first comprehensive catalog of somatic mutations in CLL with relevant clinical correlates and defines a large set of new genes that may drive the development of this common form of leukemia.
Strategies for MMP inhibition in cancer: innovations for the post-trial era
- C. Overall, C. López-Otín
- BiologyNature Reviews. Cancer
- 1 September 2002
It is now recognized that MMP activity is tightly regulated at several levels, providing new avenues for blocking these enzymes and leading to new therapeutic strategies for cancer.
Biochemical Characterization of Human Collagenase-3 (*)
- V. Knäuper, C. López-Otín, Bryan J. Smith, G. Knight, G. Murphy
- Biology, Computer ScienceJournal of Biological Chemistry
- 19 January 1996
Analysis of the substrate specificity of collagenase-3 revealed that soluble type II collagen was preferentially hydrolyzed, while the enzyme was 5 or 6 times less efficient at cleaving type I or III collagen.
