The respiratory health hazards of volcanic ash: a review for volcanic risk mitigation
- C. Horwell, P. Baxter
- Medicine
- 29 April 2006
A more systematic approach to multi-disciplinary studies in future eruptions is recommended, including establishing an archive of ash samples and a website containing health advice for the public, together with scientific and medical study guidelines for volcanologists and health-care workers.
Grain-size analysis of volcanic ash for the rapid assessment of respiratory health hazard.
- C. Horwell
- Environmental ScienceJournal of Environmental Monitoring
- 1 October 2007
Several methods for GSD characterization for health assessment are considered, the potential for low-cost measurements is investigated and the first database of health-pertinent GSD data is presented for a suite of ash samples from around the world.

The nature and formation of cristobalite at the Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat: implications for the petrology and stability of silicic lava domes
- C. Horwell, B. Williamson, E. Llewellin, D. Damby, J. L. Blond
- GeologyBulletin of Volcanology
- 21 February 2013
Cristobalite is commonly found in the dome lava of silicic volcanoes but is not a primary magmatic phase; its presence indicates that the composition and micro-structure of dome lavas evolve during,…

- A. Hansell, C. Horwell, C. Oppenheimer
- GeologyOccupational and Environmental Medicine
- 18 January 2006
The aim of this article is to introduce the health hazards associated with volcanic phenomena and current approaches to risk management.
The structure of volcanic cristobalite in relation to its toxicity; relevance for the variable crystalline silica hazard
- C. Horwell, B. Williamson, K. Donaldson, J. L. Le Blond, D. Damby, L. Bowen
- GeologyParticle and Fibre Toxicology
- 19 November 2012
The composition of volcanic cristobalite particles gives insight into previously-unconsidered inherent characteristics of silica mineralogy which may affect toxicity, and may also influence the hazard of other environmentally and occupationally produced silica dusts.

Evaluation of a novel passive sampling technique for monitoring volcanogenic hydrogen sulfide.
- C. Horwell, A. G. Allen, T. Mather, J. Patterson
- Environmental ScienceJournal of Environmental Monitoring
- 2 July 2004
A novel, low-cost passive sampling procedure for monitoring of volcanogenic hydrogen sulfide is reported. The technique is based on absorption of H2S onto treated sections of photographic paper,…
