The results lend some support to the hypothesis that RCs are triggered predominantly by large phasic mot oneurones, and the smaller tonic motoneurones seem to provide some supporting background input to the RCs.

The action of ethyl alcohol on the activity of individual Renshaw cells

Ethyl alcohol causes a marked increase in Renshaw cell activity as tested by antidromic stimulation of motor nerve fibres in cats, corresponding well with its known facilitating effect on the cholinergic neuromuscular junction.
Antagonism of pyrithinol-HCl to ethyl alcohol at a spinal cholinergic synapse

It is assumed from the results that pyrithinol-HCl exerts its protective action specifically upon cholinergic systems as well as against the alcohol induced depression of gamma motoneurones.
Activity and excitability of Renshaw cells in non-decerebrate and decerebrate cats
- R. Benecke, C. Hellweg, J. Meyer-Lohmann
- BiologyExperimental Brain Research

It was found that decerebration either had no effect on the spontaneous activity of Renshaw cells and their response to antidromic stimulation, or it enhanced activity, provided that the blood pressure was prevented from falling below critical values.
