The results are at variance with former data in which the coagulation of insect blood was described as being either a cellular agglutination, in which no special part was recognized to be played by a special category of cells, or a plasma coagulations, both considered as two physiologically distinct processes, which can occur independently or together.

Conchiolin Remnants in Mother-of-Pearl from Fossil Cephalopoda
TLDR
Replicas of surfaces of mother-of-pearl, prepared before and after corrosion by decalcifiers, have shown that the reticulated sheets correspond to the conchiolin membranes which alternate with the mineral lamellæ in the stratified nacreous configuration.
