Gastrointestinal parasites in Chinstrap Penguins from Deception Island, South Shetlands, Antarctica
- V. Vidal, Jhilson Ortiz, A. Barbosa
- BiologyParasitology Research
- 28 March 2012
The low parasite richness observed could be related to the stenophagic and pelagic diet of the host species and False negatives were found in coprological studies.

Maternal allocation in eggs when counting on helpers in a cooperatively breeding bird
- Juliana Valencia, C. Mateos, C. Cruz, J. Carranza
- Biology
- 1 April 2017
The results show that investment in clutches varied depending on the year, date in the season and age of the mother, but there were no reductions in maternal expenditure per individual egg when they counted on helpers, and a pattern emerged in the opposite direction of more investment in eggs associated with the future presence of helpers at the nestling stage.
Flexible Helping Behaviour in the Azure‐Winged Magpie
- Juliana Valencia, C. Cruz, B. González
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 1 July 2003
Although the decision to help appeared to be influenced by proximal environmental conditions hindering successful breeding, the associated benefits of helping as opposed to simply recovering for future reproduction, especially for former breeders, deserve further study.
Positive correlation between helpers at nest and nestling immune response in a cooperative breeding bird
- Juliana Valencia, Elena Solís, G. Sorci, C. Cruz
- Biology, Environmental ScienceBehavioral Ecology and Sociobiology
- 30 March 2006
A positive correlation between the number of helpers at nest and the cell-mediated immune response of nestlings is found for the first time and suggests that helping can have subtle effects on the quality of offspring that may influence their survival and future reproduction.
Apparent absence of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Toxoplasma gondii in three species of penguins along the Antarctic Peninsula
- M. Palacios, A. Barbosa, C. Cruz
- BiologyAntarctic Science
- 26 February 2010
The presence of some protozoan parasites (Cryptosporidium sp., Giardia sp., Toxoplasma gondii) on three species of Antarctic penguins was investigated from different locations along the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands and did not detect the presence of these organisms.
Second broods in a Mediterranean cooperatively-breeding corvid: the Azure-winged Magpie
- Juliana Valencia, C. Cruz, Juan Francisco Carranza Almansa
- Biology
- 2000
The results show that in spite of the presence of helpers-atthe-nest, second broods in this species may be constrained by the short duration of favourable breeding conditions in Mediterranean ecosystems, which only allow double broodedness when they are exceptionally favourable.
Winter male plumage coloration correlates with breeding status in a cooperative breeding species
- Elena Solís, J. Avilés, C. Cruz, Juliana Valencia, G. Sorci
- Biology
- 18 December 2007
The role played by structural blue coloration of males and the probability of becoming a breeder or a helper is explored and is consistent with a scenario in which nonbreeding blue plumage coloration may function as a signal of individual quality in the azure-winged magpie.
Timing of breeding in the azure-winged magpie in Spain
- Juliana Valencia, C. Cruz, Juan Francisco Carranza Almansa
- Geography
- 2002
Timing plays a central role in the success of breeding activities, particularly in variable and unpredictable climates. In this paper we investigate the proximate factors influencing the timing of…
