Antioxidants in potato
- C. Brown
- ChemistryAmerican Journal of Potato Research
- 1 March 2005
The content of compounds in potato that may act as antioxidants in the human diet is not widely appreciated. Carotenoids are present in the flesh of all potatoes. The contents mentioned in the…
Heritable basis for choice of group size in a colonial bird.
Cross-fostering experiments showed that individuals reared in colonies of sizes different from those of their birth returned to breed the next year in colonies that matched their birth colony in size and actively avoided those similar to their rearing colony, suggesting that choice of colony size is genetically based.
Weather-mediated natural selection on arrival time in cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota)
- C. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown
- Environmental ScienceBehavioral Ecology and Sociobiology
- 20 April 2000
Analysis of how viability selection affected spring arrival time in a migratory Nebraska population found periodic weather-mediated selection against early arrival constrains the cliff swallow’s breeding season and may partly prevent directional selection for earlier nesting.
Immune Defense and Host Sociality: A Comparative Study of Swallows and Martins
- A. Møller, S. Merino, C. Brown, R. J. Robertson
- BiologyAmerican Naturalist
- 1 August 2001
It is shown that the impact of parasites on host reproductive success was positively associated with the degree of sociality in the bird family Hirundinidae, however, the cost of parasitism in highly colonial species was countered by high levels of T‐ and B‐cell immune responses.
Segregation of total carotenoid in high level potato germplasm and its relationship to beta-carotene hydroxylase polymorphism
High carotenoid potato may have particular value for human health due to the antioxidant properties and the therapeutic value for eye health in patients at risk for macular degeneration, by introducing one or more genes derived from diploid Papa Amarilla germplasm.
Breeding studies in potatoes containing high concentrations of anthocyanins
- C. Brown, R. Wrolstad, R. Durst, C. P. Yang, B. Clevidence
- ChemistryAmerican Journal of Potato Research
- 1 July 2003
Studies of the breeding behavior of clones containing high levels of anthocyanins were conducted. Red-fleshed clones appeared in proportions suggesting multigenic control of degree of pigmentation.…
Energy Expenditure of Free-Ranging Wandering Albatrosses Diomedea exulans
This work has measured carbon dioxide production and water influx rates of free-ranging, foraging, wandering albatrosses attending chicks, by means of doubly labeled water, and found the lowest field metabolic rate recorded forfree-ranging birds.
Breeding for Phytonutrient Enhancement of Potato
- C. Brown
- BiologyAmerican Journal of Potato Research
- 21 May 2008
Of greatest interest are lutein and zeaxanthin, components of the human retina that must be obtained from foods for proper eye health, and anthocyanins, antioxidants that associate with membranes in the cell, which are strong anti-inflammatory agents.
Herpes simplex virus trans-regulatory protein ICP27 stabilizes and binds to 3' ends of labile mRNA
- C. Brown, M. Nakamura, J. Mosca, G. Hayward, S. Straus, L. Perera
- BiologyJournal of Virology
- 1 November 1995
The findings support the notion that HSV ICP27 modulates gene expression posttranscriptionally in part by targeting RNA.
Mortality in near-term ostrich embryos during artificial incubation.
- C. Brown, D. Peinke, A. Loveridge
- MedicineBritish Poultry Science
- 1 March 1996
Malpositioning and severe oedema were the predominant symptoms of dead-in shell embryos with 55% being malpositioned and 41% showing severe oesophageal cancer and malpositioning was significantly correlated with the amount of water lost from the eggs which in turn was correlated with egg size.
