The results show remarkable diffusive isotope fractionation for all the investigated organic compounds; however, the extent of fractionation was found to be smaller for the chlorinated ethenes and remarkably deviating from an inverse square root relationship between the isotopologues diffusion coefficients and their molecular mass.

Normal and Inverse Diffusive Isotope Fractionation of Deuterated Toluene and Benzene in Aqueous Systems
Diffusive isotope fractionation of organic contaminants in aqueous solution is difficult to quantify, and only a few experimental data sets are available for compounds of environmental interest. In…

Mixed cultivation of the enriched populations at 6 and 30 μM PCE showed that a low PCE concentration could be the driving force for both functional diversity of reductive dehalogenases and niche specialization of organohalide-respiring bacteria with overlapping substrate ranges.

A systematic evaluation of these factors allowed us to optimize the GC-qMS technique to determine chlorine isotope ratios of chlorinated organic contaminants, and found that the achievable precision considerably varies depending on the applied data evaluation scheme, the instrumental settings, and the analyte.
