BACKGROUND Steroids regimens in leprosy neuropathies are still controversial in botth types of reactions. METHOD For this trial, 21 patients with ulnar neuropathy were selected from 163 leprosy patients, 12 with type 1 reaction (T1R) and nine with type 2 (T2R). One experimental group started with prednisone 2 mg/kg/day and the control group with 1… (More)
Sensory testing (ST) as a parameter in assessing nerve damage and as a guide in anti-reaction treatment is discussed in comparison with established methods like voluntary muscle testing (VMT) and motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV). Sensory testing is shown to be a valuable addition to the existing tests and may even be used as a single parameter.
BACKGROUND Acral peeling skin syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis due to a missense mutation in transglutaminase 5. The skin peeling occurs at the separation of the stratum corneum from the stratum granulosum. CASE PRESENTATION We present a case of two siblings who developed continuous peeling of the palms and soles from the first year… (More)
BACKGROUND Skin flora varies from one site of the body to another. Individual's health, age and gender determine the type and the density of skin flora. METHODS A 1 cm² of the skin on the sternum was rubbed with sterile cotton swab socked in 0.9% normal saline and plated on blood agar. This was cultured at 35 °C. The bacteria were identified by culturing… (More)
Neuropathic pain (NP) is a well-recognized feature of leprosy neuropathy. However, the diagnosis of NP is difficult using only clinical criteria. In the study reported here, by means of conventional nerve conduction studies, the authors sought for an association between long-latency responses and NP complaints in leprosy patients with type 1 and 2… (More)
BACKGROUND Leprosy neuropathy, despite being primarily demyelinating, frequently leads to axonal loss. Neurophysiological examination of the nerves during Type 1 (T1R) and Type 2 reactions (T2R) may give some insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS Neurophysiological examinations were performed in 28 ulnar nerves during a clinical trial of… (More)
