Some formerly continent-specific clones have now spread around the world and are no longer confined to a single continent.
Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolate from a Patient in Pennsylvania
- F. Tenover, L. Weigel, B. Bozdoğan
- Biology, MedicineAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
- 1 January 2004
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of SmaI-digested genomic DNA indicated that the isolate belonged to the USA100 lineage (also known as the New York/Japan clone), the most common staphylococcal PFGE type found in hospitals in the United States.
Molecular Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance Mechanisms of Methicillin‐Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Bovine Milk
- S. Türkyilmaz, S. Tekbıyık, E. Oryasin, B. Bozdoğan
- Biology, MedicineZoonoses and Public Health

The aim of this study was to identify methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains gathered from 2002 to 2006 from milk samples in Aydin region in Turkey, and to indicate transmission of these strains between human and animals.

Antibacterial susceptibility of a vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain isolated at the Hershey Medical Center.
- B. Bozdoğan, D. Eşel, C. Whitener, Frederick A. Browne, P. Appelbaum
- Biology, MedicineJournal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy
- 1 November 2003
Staphylococcus aureus strain HMC3, was resistant to vancomycin (VRSA) through the presence of the vanA resistance gene; it also contained mecA, erm(A), erM(B), tet(K) and aac(6')-aph(2), conferring resistance to licensed beta-lactams, macrolides, tetracycline and aminoglycosides.
Effects of an Efflux Mechanism and Ribosomal Mutations on Macrolide Susceptibility of Haemophilus influenzae Clinical Isolates
- M. Perić, B. Bozdoğan, M. Jacobs, P. Appelbaum
- Biology, MedicineAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
- 1 March 2003
It is concluded that the vast majority of H. influenzae strains have a macrolide efflux mechanism, with a few of these being hyperresistant (1.3%) due to one or several ribosomal mutations.
A New Resistance Gene, linB, Conferring Resistance to Lincosamides by Nucleotidylation in Enterococcus faecium HM1025
- B. Bozdoğan, L. Berrezouga, R. Leclercq
- BiologyAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
- 1 April 1999
ABSTRACT Resistance to lincomycin and clindamycin in the clinical isolateEnterococcus faecium HM1025 is due to a ribosomal methylase encoded by an ermAM-like gene and the plasmid-mediated…
Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the absence of vancomycin exposure.

- Medicine, BiologyClinical Infectious Diseases
- 15 April 2004
This case illustrates that recent exposure by patients to vancomycin is not necessary for development of vanA-containing VRSA, and it is essential that microbiology laboratories adequately test for vancomYcin-resistance in S. aureus.
Effects of Genes Encoding Resistance to Streptogramins A and B on the Activity of Quinupristin-Dalfopristin against Enterococcus faecium
- B. Bozdoğan, R. Leclercq
- BiologyAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
- 1 November 1999
The presence of both thesatA and vgb genes (regardless of the presence of an ermB gene) was necessary to confer full quinupristin-dalfopristin resistance to the host.
Inducible Clindamycin Resistance and Molecular Epidemiologic Trends of Pediatric Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Dallas, Texas
- S. Chavez-Bueno, B. Bozdoğan, P. Appelbaum
- Biology, MedicineAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
- 1 June 2005
It is concluded that, among erythromycin-resistant, clindamycin-susceptible CA-MRSA strains isolated from children in Dallas, inducible methylase resistance became less common from 1999 to 2002 and the phenotype of strains was associated with their sequence type.
