Thirty-five species of aquatic hyphomycetes were screened for the ability to degrade polysaccharides and some other obvious components of plant tissues. Under laboratory conditions, nearly all strains tested were able to degrade lignin, pectin, cellulose and protein, as well as the secondary products of cellulose, xylan and amylose decomposition.
