BACKGROUND Excessive Th1 activity in peripheral blood plays a probable role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The aim of the study was to investigate whether disturbed local immune reactions are also present in decidua. METHODS Flow cytometric analysis of CD3, CD19, CD56/CD16, CD4, CD8, CD4/CD29, CD4/CD45RA, CD4/CD45RO, CD8/CD28, CD3/CD69 lymphocyte(More)
UNLABELLED The aim of our study was to evaluate serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) as tumor markers--study based on the data about tumor cytokines production and tumor-host interactions. METHODS We investigated 48 women: 17 with ovarian cancer untreated before, 16 with(More)
Serum C-reactive protein levels (CRP) were measured by means of the immunoturbidimetric assay technique in 33 healthy pregnant women (38-42 week of gestation) and 32 healthy women in labour at term. CRP values for pregnant women ranged from 0.15 to 1.5 mg/dl with the median value 0.2 mg/dl. The 95th percentile for CRP in these pregnant women was 1.2 mg/dl.(More)
OBJECTIVES The purpose of our study was to analyse the epidemiological data, signs and symptoms, FIGO staging in patients operated for the first time for ovarian cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of patients' charts with ovarian cancer operated at the Department of Gynaecological Surgery of Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital-Research(More)
OBJECTIVES Analysis of the type and localization of the ovarian tumors in the reproductive age group of women. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group consisted of all women operated on Gynecologic Surgery Department of Polish Mothers's Memorial Hospital-Research Institute due to ovarian tumors in 1996-99. As the reproductive age we defined 18-39 year, when(More)
If the 'Th2 phenomenon' is dependent on trophoblastic antigens and cytokines, the profile of cytokines secreted by decidual lymphocytes (DL) should indicate stronger Th2 shift than that of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). We studied spontaneous and mitogen-stimulated 'in vitro' cytokine secretion of cultured lymphocytes isolated from peripheral blood (n(More)
OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate indications for laparoscopy performed in Department of Gynecological Surgery of Polish Mother's Memorial Research Institute. MATERIALS AND METHODS We have analyzed hospital charts of 342 patients who had been treated with laparoscopy in 1991-1999. RESULTS During last years a progressive frequency in performing(More)
OBJECTIVES There is growing evidence that Th1/Th2 imbalance in cytokine network may play role in immunopathology of preeclampsia (PE). Normal pregnancy is "Th2 phenomenon" while PE is believed to be caused by Th1-shift. There is few data concerning Th1/Th2 imbalance in transient hypertension of pregnancy (TH). DESIGN The aim of this study was to check the(More)
OBJECTIVES The purpose of our study was to analyse the operative procedures and complications in patients operated for the first time for ovarian cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of patients' charts with ovarian cancer operated at the Department of Gynaecological Surgery of Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital-Research Institute in(More)
OBJECTIVES Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1, CD54) is involved in process of leukocytes adhesion to endothelium as well as in their migration to surrounding tissues. There is much evidence that pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) presents a state of endothelial destruction mediated partially by increased ICAM-1 expression on endothelial cells and(More)
