A case-control study was conducted in four hospitals in northeastern Thailand to identify risk factors for melioidosis and bacteremic melioidosis. Cases were patients with culture-proven melioidosis, and there were two types of controls (those with infections, i.e., with community-acquired septicemia caused by other bacteria, and those without infection,(More)
A total of 121 Escherichia coli (47 extended-spectrum β-lactamase [ESBL] and 74 non-ESBL producers) and 75 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates (49 ESBL and 26 non-ESBL producers) were collected from urine samples between October 2010 and April 2011 at a university hospital and assessed for the presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes.(More)
Sixty-one extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates were collected from Srinagarind Hospital, Thailand. These included 43 Enterobacteriaceae and 18 Pseudomonadaceae. The 43 Enterobacteriaceae were found to produce the following ESBLs: 26 (60.5%) SHV-12, 13 (30.2%) SHV-5, two (4.7%) SHV-2a, one (2.3%) VEB-1 and one (2.3%) unidentified.(More)
OBJECTIVES To detect carbapenemases in clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae collected from patients in a university hospital in Thailand between October 2010 and August 2011. METHODS A total of 4818 Enterobacteriaceae isolates were screened for the presence of carbapenemases by ertapenem and imipenem disc diffusion tests. All positive screening(More)
Most patients with community-acquired pneumonia are treated as out-patients with empirical therapy, since initially the etiologic agent is unknown. We prospectively assessed the etiologies and treatment outcomes of pneumonia from February 2003 to 2004 at ambulatory clinics. Forty-four patients were included with a mean age of 49.2 (SD 18.2) years. The male(More)
We screened 533 and 361 methicillin (meticillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated in a university hospital in 2002 and 2003 and in 2006 and 2007, respectively, and identified 4 (0.8%) of the strains in the first group and 8 (2.2%) of the strains in second group as heterogeneous vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (heterogeneous VISA) strains and(More)
Between February 2005 and January 2006 in Srinagarind Hospital, Thailand, 44 from 1730 isolates (2.5%) of Escherichia coli and 8 from 982 isolates (0.8%) of Klebsiella pneumoniae were found to produce plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases (pAmpCs) as detected by a cefoxitin-Hodge test followed by a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. Fifteen(More)
This study presents updates on molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae from Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. All isolates were screened for the presence of ESBL genes, bla(TEM), bla(SHV), bla(VEB) and bla(CTX-M), using PCR followed by nucleotide sequence(More)
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, an infectious disease common in the tropics. Melioidosis is most prevalent in the northeastern part of Thailand. The diseases has diverse clinical manifestations ranging from mild localized to fatal septicemic forms. The bacterial genetic factors contributing to the severity of melioidosis(More)
Five blaOXA-48-like-carrying Enterobacteriaceae isolates collected from two Thai patients in December 2012 were characterized. Three Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates giving two different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and sequence types (ST11 and ST37) from patient 1 harbored blaOXA-48 locating on Tn1999.2, whereas two Escherichia coli isolates(More)
