Immunoglobulin levels were compared in smoking and non-smoking grain handlers and teachers. Mean IgC and IgM levels were significantly lower, and IgE levels were significantly higher, in the smokers than in the non-smokers. IgA levels were also lower but with the numbers studied not significantly so. IgD levels were unchanged.
BACKGROUND We investigated the association among tissue eosinophilia, cellular infiltration, and cytokine mRNA expression in chronic hyperplastic sinusitis (CHS). METHODS Percutaneous biopsies of the maxillary sinuses and nasal polyps were performed in 12 adult patients (six men and six women) of whom seven were nonallergic and 11 were asthmatic. Progressive systemic sclerosis alters smooth muscle function throughout the gastrointestinal tract. In 10 consecutive patients with the disease, colonic spike activity and contractile activity were measured after a 1000-kcal meal, intramuscular injection of neostigmine, or intravenous injection of metoclopramide. The 1000-kcal meal stimulated a significant… (More)
Estrogen content represents a tradeoff between cycle control and side effects, but few direct comparisons of 20 and 30/35 micrograms preparations are available. To address this issue, we conducted a randomized, open-label multicenter clinical trial comparing Alesse (20 micrograms ethinyl estradiol [EE]), Mircette (20 micrograms EE), and Ortho Tri-Cyclen (35… (More)
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers were measured in 83 immunosuppressed renal transplant patients who were followed for periods of 2 to 15 years. Sixty-nine patients were negative for HBsAg before transplantation, of whom 14 were positive for anti-HBs. The remaining 14 patients were HBsAg positive prior to transplantation. Eighteen patients were identified as… (More)
Quality of life is an important consideration in the treatment of early prostate cancer. Laboratory and clinical data suggest that higher radiation doses delivered to the bulb of penis and proximal penile structures correlates with higher rates of post-radiation impotence. The goal of this investigation was to determine if intensity-modulated radiation… (More)
This study correlates the expression of p16(INK4a) and p53 with the detection of high risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in three clinical grades of smokeless tobacco keratosis (STK) as compared with patients without a history of smokeless tobacco use. Tissue samples, including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were evaluated for the expression of p16(INK4a) and… (More)
