Antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were determined in serum samples from 616 equids (454 horses, 80 mules and 82 donkeys) in a cross-sectional study of 420 herds in Andalusia (Southern Spain), the region with the highest number of equids in Spain. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 10.8% horses, 15.0% mules and 25.6% donkeys by using the modified(More)
Two cases of meningitis due to Streptococcus suis in humans are reported here. A butcher and an abattoir worker were referred to a health centre in Castellón (Spain) with fever and symptoms of meningitis. After adequate treatment, a slight hipoacusia persisted as sequelae in both cases. Colonies of S. suis group R, serotype 2 and phenotype MRP+EF+ were(More)
A microbiological and epidemiological survey examining Campylobacter species-related infection in dogs from clinics in Cordoba (Southern Spain) was performed from May 2007 to March 2008. Three-hundred and six rectal swabs were taken from both ill and healthy dogs, and an epidemiological questionnaire was filled out. The isolated bacterial strains were(More)
We report three cases of tuberculosis in alpacas from Spain caused by Mycobacterium bovis. The animals revealed two different lesional patterns. Mycobacterial culture and PCR assay yielded positive results for M. bovis. Molecular typing of the isolates identified spoligotype SB0295 and identical variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) allele sizes.
A total of 142 strains from different serotypes of Streptococcus suis isolated in Spain from diseased pigs (88 strains) and healthy carrier pigs (54 strains) were studied for the presence of a muramidase released protein (MRP) and an extracellular factor (EF). The following five phenotypes: MRP+EF+, MRP+EF-, MRP-EF+, MRP+EF* and MRP*EF- were detected. A(More)
The indirect ELISA was used to detect antibodies to influenzavirus A in the sera of wildfowl from the Donana National Park. Of the 712 birds examined, 44 (6.2%) were seropositive. Positive birds belonged to 10 of the 13 species studied. Infection rates varied widely: spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia, 32.2%), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos, 9.9%), gadwall (Anas(More)
Of 927 sera taken from poultry from 84 flocks, 33% proved seropositive. Sixty-three per cent of flocks were found to be seropositive to ELISA (almost all situated within areas where there were waterfowl). The comparable figures, using an HI test, were 16% and 47%, respectively. These data suggest that the influenza A viruses may be enzootic in this area. Of(More)
Salmonella enterica serotype Abortusovis, an ovine host-specific serotype, rare in most countries, is responsible for epidemic abortion episodes in Spain. With the aim of surveillance and detection of the spread of specific clones, 55 Abortusovis isolates collected during 1996-2001 from flocks in 11 provinces, were studied using XbaI-PFGE. Despite the fact(More)
