An endogenous neuropeptide, opioid growth factor (OGF), chemically termed [Met(5)]-enkephalin, arrested the progression of established disease in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS) called experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). This study treated mice who demonstrated 2 consecutive days of behavioral decline following injections of myelin(More)
The relative sensitivities of somatosensory and motor areas of the cerebral cortex in penicillin epileptogenesis were compared in urethane-anaesthetized rats. Penicillin was applied electrophoretically from a fluid-filled micro-electrode. Spontaneous focal interictal epileptiform discharges were detected by a nearby recording electrode. In motor cortex,(More)
Bicuculline has been applied electrophoretically from a fluid filled microelectrode at different depths within the primary somatosensory area of the cerebral cortex of rats anaesthetized with urethane. The delay between onset of drug application at a constant rate and onset of spontaneous focal interictal epileptiform discharges (FIEDs), detected by a(More)
Among 27 uveal melanomas, five were found to contain tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Four had high levels of lymphocytes, and the fifth had comparatively low levels but adequate numbers for comprehensive analysis. The TILs were analyzed by flow cytometry to determine the relative proportions of lymphocyte subsets and markers of lymphocyte activation.(More)
Five rat monoclonal antibodies to human uveal melanoma were produced using primary tumor tissue for immunization and screening. These monoclonal antibodies were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay against 12 uveal melanomas, one breast carcinoma, and peripheral blood lymphocytes from five healthy volunteers. One monoclonal antibody, 4A3, reacted(More)
SUMMARY. The hypotension and bradycardia observed after intravenous injection of dextran sulf ate in rabbits was prevented by prior depletion of circulating platelets, but was not prevented by depletion of the third component of complement or Hageman factor. Dextran sulfate injection caused immediate thrombocytopenia with temporary localization of platelets(More)
Astrocytes become activated and proliferate in response to autoimmune diseases involving the CNS. In many cases, elevated numbers of astrocytes may compound inflammatory responses and exacerbate neuronal degeneration. The regulation of astrocytes in disease states has been shown as an important corollary to disease progression and recovery. This study(More)
PURPOSE To elucidate the factors in tear production, this study examined the role of endogenous opioids and opioid receptors in spontaneous episodic reduced tear volume. METHODS A model of spontaneous episodic decreases in the quantity of tears was characterized in otherwise normal Sprague-Dawley rats using Schirmer's test. A single eye drop of 10(-5) M(More)
