We propose a criterion to predict the relative value of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold in single-mode optical fibers with different refractive index profiles. We confirm our results by several representative measurements. We show that with the proper profile design one can achieve more than 3 dB increase in the SBS threshold compared to(More)
This paper reports selected results from two comprehensive evaluation studies of the Information Prescription (or "Information Rx") Program implementation conducted from 2002-05 by the American College of Physicians Foundation (ACPF) and the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). In this Program physicians are provided with Information Prescription pads,(More)
As incorporated in Healthy People 2010 objectives, data and information systems and a skilled workforce are 2 of the critical components of the public health infrastructure. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) are important resources for improving Internet access and providing related training to(More)
OBJECTIVES To develop a knowledgebase of stories illustrating the variety of roles that librarians can assume in emergency and disaster planning, preparedness, response, and recovery, the National Library of Medicine conducted an oral history project during the summer of 2007. The history aimed to describe clearly and compellingly the activities--both(More)
We report a direct observation of the predicted polarity reversal due to the Gouy phase shift for single-cycle terahertz pulses passing through a focus. In 1890 Gouy showed that a focused electromagnetic beam will acquire an additional axial 180 ± phase shift with respect to a plane wave as it evolves through its focus [1–3]. This phase shift has important(More)
We demonstrate the reconstruction of one- and two-dimensional objects by numerically backpropagating measured scattered terahertz transients. The spatial resolution determined by the Sparrow criterion is found to correspond to approximately 30% of the peak wavelength and 85% of the mean wavelength of the power spectrum of the single-cycle waveform.
OBJECTIVES Overcoming health disparities between majority and minority populations is a significant national challenge. This paper assesses outreach to Native Americans (American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians) by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). A companion paper details NLM's portfolio of Native American outreach projects. METHOD(More)
OBJECTIVES This paper provides the most complete accounting of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM's) Native outreach since 1995, when there were only a few scattered projects. METHOD The descriptive overview is based on a review of project reports, inventories, and databases and input from the NLM Specialized Information Services Division, National(More)
High power operation of narrow linewidth optical fiber amplifiers is usually limited by the onset of stimulated Brillouin scattering. In this paper, we present results demonstrating over 500 Watts of power in a single mode beam from a fiber designed to suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering through a reduction in the overlap of the optical and acoustic(More)
