In the search for a selective adenosine A1 receptor antagonist with greater aqueous solubility than the compounds currently in clinical trials as diuretics, a series of 1,4-substituted 8-cyclohexyl and 8-bicyclo[2.2.2]octylxanthines were investigated. The binding affinities of a variety of cyclohexyl and bicyclo[2.2.2]octylxanthines for the rat and human… (More)
Degeneration of elastic fibres leading to aortic aneurysm and rupture was observed in rats treated with cysteamine. The destructive changes are comparable to those of spontaneously occurring cardiovascular abnormalities in man.
Fresh rice oil protects against gastric ulceration in rats maintained on an impoverished diet, whereas stored oil is ulcerogenic. Rice oil contains ketoaldehydes which are ulcerogenic but their activity is prevented by the presence of antioxidants such as alpha-tocopherol, which is lost on storage. Protection may also be restored by the addition of… (More)
Forty six patients with endoscopically diagnosed duodenal ulceration were randomly allocated to treatment with either sucralfate 1 g qds (n = 24) or cimetidine 200 mg tds and 400 mg nocte (n = 22). When the ulcers healed, a maintenance dose of sucralfate 1 g bd or cimetidine 400 mg nocte was given for one year (or until relapse if earlier). Biopsies of… (More)
In India there are regions of high incidence and regions of low incidence of duodenal ulcer. Rats prefed for two weeks on diets from low incidence areas developed significantly fewer rumenal ulcers after pyloric ligation than rats fed on diets from high incidence areas. The protective action was found in various individual items of food taken from the diets… (More)
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Mapping the geographical distribution of duodenal ulcer in relation to staple diets, and experiments on animal peptic ulcer models suggested that the lipid fraction in certain foodstuffs had a protective effect which was most marked in the lipid obtained from Horse gram (Dolichos biflorus). Lipid obtained from stored polished rice or… (More)
The ulcerogenic and protective effects of various rice fractions in the diet were studied in the pylorus ligated ulcer model in the rat. Oil present in rice and particularly rice bran becomes ulcerogenic on storage and in this model results in a significant increase in the median (range) numbers of ulcers from six (one to ten) to nine (six to 15) (P less… (More)
