C3H/HeJBir is a mouse substrain that is highly susceptible to colitis. Their CD4+ T cells react to Ags of the commensal enteric bacteria, and the latter can mediate colitis when activated by these Ags and transferred to histocompatible scid recipients. In this study, multiple long-term C3H/HeJBir CD4+ T cell (Bir) lines reactive to commensal enteric… (More)
Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) has been recently associated with watery diarrheal disease in livestock and young children. These strains of B. fragilis secrete an extracellular heat-labile protein toxin with a mess of approximately 20 kD. This toxin has been shown to have two major biological activities: stimulation of secretion in ligated… (More)
BACKGROUND Despite its promise as a highly useful therapy for pancreatic cancer (PC), the addition of external beam radiation therapy to PC treatment has shown varying success in clinical trials. Understanding PC radioresistance and discovery of methods to sensitise PC to radiation will increase patient survival and improve quality of life. In this study,… (More)
Two of three patients treated with high doses of spiramycin for Cryptosporidium infection developed acute intestinal injury. Spiramycin at high doses may be directly toxic to the intestinal epithelium and thus may have limited utility as therapy for cryptosporidiosis in AIDS patients.
BACKGROUND The forearm location for the initial vascular access has traditionally been considered the most desirable; however, recent advances in our understanding the physiology of fistula development suggest that the larger proximal vessels with higher blood flows may be associated with increased wall stress and faster fistula development. We examined… (More)
Despite the increased risk factors and a high incidence of bacteremia in hemodialysis patients, the presence of mycotic aneurysms in the hemodialysis population is virtually unknown. Only two cases have been previously reported in this population. The diagnosis is usually made by angiogram, magnetic resonance angiography, or computed tomography (CT) in the… (More)
