The Nubian Sandstone (NSS) aquifer of northeast Africa is believed to have been recharged in previous wet climatic periods in the Quaternary Period. While this is largely true, we show using the Sinai Peninsula as our test site that the aquifer is locally receiving modern recharge under the current dry climatic conditions. The validity of the advocated… (More)
Rising demands for fresh water supplies in arid lands are leading to excessive exploitation and unsustainable mining of non-renewable fossil groundwater. Using the Nubian Aquifer of Saharan Africa as a test site, we demonstrate an integrated approach to identify areas of discharge that could have gone undetected, and to model extraction that is sustained by… (More)
KEYWORDS Assessment of groundwater resources; Arid land hydrology; Transcurrent fault systems Summary Groundwater potentials were assessed for major transcurrent fault systems in basement complex terrains using the Najd transcurrent Shear System of the Arabian Nubian Shield as a test case. Spatial analysis, within a geographical information system… (More)
Rising demands for fresh water supplies are leading to water management practices that are altering natural flow systems worldwide. One of the most devastated of these natural systems is the Tigris–Euphrates watershed that over the past three decades has witnessed the construction of over 60 engineering projects that eliminated seasonal flooding, reduced… (More)
Chemical and stable isotopic compositions of groundwater samples from the Rub Al Khali (RAK) in southern Saudi Arabia were analyzed. Samples were collected from wells of variable depth (1.5–800 m) along the perimeter of the eastern half of the RAK including flowing artesian wells, pumped wells (formerly artesian), and shallow hand-dug wells encompassing… (More)
The lack of adequate field measurements often hampers the construction and calibration of rainfall-runoff models over many of the world's watersheds. We adopted methodologies that rely heavily on readily available remote sensing datasets as viable alternatives for assessing, managing, and modelling of such remote and inadequately gauged regions. The Soil… (More)
Linear frequency modulated chirp signals are used in radar system. The signals may by easily compressed to increase range of the radar. To obtain compressed signal with small sidelobes, weighting function must be implemented. The paper describes some methods of chirp signals weighting that may by useful especially for signals with low compression ratio.
GIS and Remote Sensing are powerful technologies for conducting research in remote and inaccessible regions in the world. Water is one of the basic necessities for the development of societies and agricultural communities. With the continuous rise in populations of the developing countries worldwide , many of these countries are now facing serious water… (More)
