BACKGROUND Renal aquaporin-1 (AQP1), a water channel protein, is known to be secreted into urine, conveyed by nano-sized extracellular vesicles called exosomes. A previous study has demonstrated that acetazolamide (AZ), a diuretic that inhibits carbonic anhydrases, alters the expression level of AQP1 in cultured cells. Here we investigated whether AZ alters(More)
Aquaporin-11 (AQP11) is the latest member of the mammalian water channel protein family to be described. Recent in vivo studies have shown that mutation at Cys(227) causes renal failure. However the importance of Cys(227) for the molecular function of AQP11 is largely unknown. In this study, we examined the subcellular localization, water permeability, and(More)
Urinary exosomes are nano-sized vesicles secreted into urine from all types of renal epithelial cells and are known to contain possible biomarker proteins for renal diseases. Gentamicin has been reported to decrease the level of renal aquaporin (AQP)2, which is known to be mainly expressed in renal collecting ducts and excreted into the urine via exosomes.(More)

The effect of serum content of culture medium on the kinetics of cell growth and metabolism has been studied in HeLa S3 culture. Increasing the serum concentration from 5 to 15% in Ham's F12 mediu m increased the total number of living cells by about 30%. Further increase in serum concentration resulted in significant reduction in viable cell number.(More)
Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is an autosomal recessive hereditary disorder in Japanese Black cattle, caused by a mutation of the Lyst gene. So far, the mutation has been detected by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. However, this method is disadvantaged by its low-throughput performance. Here, we report an alternative(More)
A short account of the objectives and strategies of Gezira Medical School in relation to community medicine and primary health care is given. The introduction of primary health care programme management into the curriculum is described. Preliminary evaluation of the first course reflected positive results for students' achievement and acceptance. The(More)
