BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Depth of invasion and stage of the disease are established prognostic indicators in cutaneous malignant melanoma. The role of other parameters is still an open problem. METHODS In 93 consecutive patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma, the level of invasion, tumor thickness, ulceration, vascular invasion, lymphoplasmocytic(More)
A case of a soft-tissue tumor of the left gluteal region in a 33-year-old woman is presented. Immunohistochemical study and electron microscopic examination confirmed multidirectional differentiation of the tumor. The patient died 9 months after surgery, despite complementary multimodal therapy. No autopsy was performed.
We report a case of carcinoma of the gallbladder in a 67-year-old woman. The description comprises the histological, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and cytogenetical picture of the tumor. The ultrastructural features as well as chromosomal changes may denote the epithelial derivation of the tumor studied.
Hearing in 60 diabetics aged 20-70 years were studied by means of tonal, verbal and B'ekèsy audiometry, SISI tests, Fowler tests, stapedius reflex and tone decay tests. The material was grouped according to the diabetes type, chronicity of disease, age, sex and presence of retino- and polyneuropathy. The results proved that diabetes may cause the(More)
A case of parachordoma in a 45-year-old female was described. Histologically, the recurrent lesion, in comparison with the primary tumor, demonstrated an increased cellular atypia and mitotic rate. The tumor cells expressed EMA, vimentin, S 100 protein, and also a trace desmin content was present. Electron microscopic study provided no characteristic(More)
1. Sixteen adult male volunteers were selected on the basis of body size and customary food intake: half could be described as "lean' and habitually consuming large amounts of food (group mean +/- SEM: 15.03 +/- 1.13 MJ/d), the high-energy-intake group (HEI group), and half though "lean' admitted to a weight problem and regularly consumed a lower than(More)
In this study 80 cases of predominantly adult rhabdomyosarcoma are presented as follows: 20 cases of the embryonal type, 32 cases of the alveolar and 8 cases of the pleomorphic type. Additional histologic classification was performed in each type. In myotube stage the histologic picture of fetal muscles cannot be compared to the alveolar type of(More)
BACKGROUND There is increasing evidence that plasma homocysteine level is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis. Low levels of serum folates, cobalamin and pyridoxine are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Most dietary products contain cholesterol as well as methionine, so hyperlipidemia could be associated with a higher(More)
Clinicopathologic parameters of 70 consecutive mesenchymal tumors from 63 patients were evaluated. In all these cases, the DNA content was analyzed by flow cytometry, and the expression of proliferative antigen MIB1 and p53 protein was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Our study verified the prognostic usefulness of proliferative indicators, above all(More)
An electron-microscopic examination of ten cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma is presented. The most characteristic features for diagnosis are: presence of microvilli and desmosomes, abundant intermediate filaments and direct contact between microvilli and collagen fibres. Microvilli were present not only on the luminal surface of the cells, but also(More)
