Review of 1600 water births. Does water birth increase the risk of neonatal infection?
Water birth appears to be associated with a significantly shorter first stage of labor, lower episiotomy rate and reduced analgesic requirements when compared with other delivery positions, and if women are selected appropriately and hygiene rules are respected, water birth seems to be safe for both the mother and neonate.
Water Contamination and the Rate of Infections for Water Births
Water birth is a valuable alternative to traditional delivery when cer- tain criteria are met and risk factors are excluded and contamination of the water with such microorganisms seems not to translate into an increased risk of neonatal infection.
