Zika virus impairs growth in human neurospheres and brain organoids
Results suggest that ZIKV abrogates neurogenesis during human brain development when it targets human brain cells, reducing their viability and growth as neurospheres and brain organoids.
Tissue culture adaptation of foot-and-mouth disease virus selects viruses that bind to heparin and are attenuated in cattle
- D. Sá-Carvalho, E. Rieder, B. Baxt, R. Rodarte, A. Tanuri, P. Mason
- BiologyJournal of Virology
- 1 July 1997
Results indicate that in vitro cultivation of FMDV type O selects viruses that bind to heparin and that viruses with theHeparin-binding phenotype are attenuated in the natural host.
Genomic Characterization of a Novel SARS-CoV-2 Lineage from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- C. M. Voloch, Ronaldo da Silva Francisco, A. T. R. de Vasconcelos
- BiologyJournal of Virology
- 26 December 2020
A novel lineage of SARS-CoV-2, originated from B.1.28, distinguished by five single-nucleotide variants (SNVs), was identified and can be rapidly spread in the state of Rio de Janeiro, raising concerns about public health management and continuous need for genomic surveillance during the second wave of infections.
Evolution and epidemic spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil
- D. Candido, I. Claro, Nuno R. Faria
- BiologyScience
- 12 June 2020
New light is shed on the epidemic transmission and evolutionary trajectories of SARS-CoV-2 lineages in Brazil and evidence that current interventions remain insufficient to keep virus transmission under control in this country is provided.
Brazilian Network for HIV Drug Resistance Surveillance (HIV-BResNet): a survey of chronically infected individuals
- R. Brindeiro, R. Diaz, A. Tanuri
- BiologyAIDS (London)
- 2 May 2003
Brazil has a low prevalence of drug-resistant strains circulating among recently diagnosed individuals, however, there was an increase in these rates compared with similar studies performed with samples collected in Brazil from 1996 to 1998.

Genomic and epidemiological monitoring of yellow fever virus transmission potential
- N. Faria, M. Kraemer, O. Pybus
- MedicineScience
- 16 April 2018
It is shown that the age and sex distribution of human cases is characteristic of sylvatic transmission, which establishes a framework for monitoring YFV transmission in real time that will contribute to a global strategy to eliminate future YFFV epidemics.
