4 metazoan parasite species were found: hydroid Eugymnanthea inquilina, gill turbellarian Urastoma cyprinae, trematode Proctoces maculatus and gut copepod Mytilicola intestinalis; larger mussels were more often infested than smaller ones.

The protozoans Ancistrum mytili and Marteilia refringens/maurini were found parasitizing cultured mussels in the Thermaikos Gulf and the prevalence of both parasites was relatively high in a polluted area.

The microsporidian Steinhausia mytilovum was found parasitising female cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Thermaikos Gulf and induced a strong hemocyte infiltration inside affected gonadal follicles.
