Phylogeography and natural selection in the Tenerife gecko Tarentola delalandii: testing historical and adaptive hypotheses
- T. Gübitz, R. Thorpe, A. Malhotra
- BiologyMolecular Ecology
- 1 September 2000
A study on the gecko Tarentola delalandii on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, which provides an outstanding model of an exceptionally high degree of phylogeographic differentiation in magnitude and pattern on a small spatial scale and implies that natural selection can override a historical legacy.
THE DYNAMICS OF NATURAL SELECTION AND VICARIANCE IN THE DOMINICAN ANOLE: PATTERNS OF WITHIN-ISLAND MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL DIVERGENCE
- A. Malhotra, R. Thorpe
- BiologyEvolution; international journal of organic…
- 2000
Phylogenetic analysis revealed the presence of two distinct lineages on the island with strong phylogeographic structure and an exceptional instance of congruence between all morphological character systems and lineage boundaries, which occurs at the transition between the northern and southern Caribbean ecotypes.
Matrix Correspondence Tests on the DNA Phylogeny of the Tenerife Lacertid Elucidate both Historical Causes and Morphological Adaptation
- R. Thorpe, Heather Black, A. Malhotra
- Biology
- 1 September 1996
Tests on the DNA phylogeny based primarily on population data from 57 localities on Tenerife support the hypothesis that there were populations on two putative precursor islands that have come into secondary contact and intro- gressed after these islands were joined to form Tenerives by the eruption of the Canadas edifice.
Ecological diversification in a group of Indomalayan pitvipers (Trimeresurus): convergence in taxonomically important traits has implications for species identification
- K. Sanders, A. Malhotra, R. Thorpe
- BiologyJournal of Evolutionary Biology
- 1 July 2004
Ecological convergence in traits used for classification is found to have important implications for species identification where taxa are distributed over varying environments, including those that are presently used to identify the species.
The dynamics of genetic and morphological variation on volcanic islands
- T. Gübitz, R. Thorpe, A. Malhotra
- GeologyProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological…
- 7 April 2005
Analysis of genetic and morphological variation in the gecko Tarentola boettgeri on the island of Gran Canaria and a neighbouring volcanic island of similar age but distinctly different geological past suggests that historically caused patterns in morphology may be overwritten by natural selection within 2 million years.
Population differentiation and nuclear gene flow in the Dominican anole (Anolis oculatus)
- A. Stenson, A. Malhotra, R. Thorpe
- BiologyMolecular Ecology
- 1 September 2002
Allele frequency data from nuclear microsatellite loci were used to investigate patterns of nuclear gene flow and population structure in the morphologically variable Dominican anole, and an exceptional case on the west coast of Dominica indicates that isolation resulting from vicariant events may lead to rapid differentiation at both mitochondrial and nuclear loci.
A Report On The Status Of The Herpetofauna Of The Commonwealth Of Dominica, West Indies
- A. Malhotra, R. Thorpe, E. Hypolite, A. James
- Environmental Science
- 2007
We review the status of the herpetofauna of the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is often cited as having the most complete extant herpetofauna of all the Lesser Antillean islands, a region which has…
The use of amplified fragment length polymorphism in determining species trees at fine taxonomic levels: analysis of a medically important snake, Trimeresurus albolabris
- N. Giannasi, R. Thorpe, A. Malhotra
- BiologyMolecular Ecology
- 1 February 2001
It is suggested that AFLPs may prove a valuable aid in determining species trees as opposed to gene trees at fine taxonomic levels and this should facilitate the incorporation of molecular data into such activities as antivenom production and conservation management.
