Evidence is presented that the PKS/NRPS gene psoA is required for the biosynthesis of pseurotin A, a compound with an unusual heterospirocyclic γ‐lactam structure that is reported to be a competitive inhibitor of chitin synthase and an inducer of nerve‐cell proliferation.

A fusion between a central isoprenoid pathway enzyme and phytoene synthase improves substrate conversion efficiency and redirects metabolites into carotenoid biosynthesis and a chimeric GGPS11-PSY metabolon (PYGG) is constructed, which converted GGPP to phy toene almost quantitatively in vitro and did not show the GGPP leakage typical of the individual enzymes.
